503.111gateway v creative labsVYGER::KIRKPATRICKIIAN KIRKPATRICK@AYOMon Feb 17 1997 11:0727
    I have a Gateway P5-166 with a "EuroViva 28,800bps Data/Fax" Modem
and a Soundblaster 32PnP soundcard (not provided by Gateway).
I'm currently in the middle of a "we don't know if our hardware is
    compatible with the other".

The soundcard works without any problems aprt from the fact that when
I dial out I can't hear the dial tone, ringing, or handshake.
    That's the only issue.

The modem has a cable connection which fits the MPC2 socket on the
soundcard, but I can hardly hear the dial/ring/handshake sounds
(very very low). This connection appears to be an alternative CD-ROM
    audio connection.

The soundcard instructions state that external connections include
"Modem Feature Connector', but where on the card is it ?
Also, what is an MPU-41 connection.

I currently have two pairs of speakers attached (one pair to the
soundcard, and one pair to the modem), but this seems very messy.
Can anyone advise a cleaner solution.

    Regards,

    Ian Kirkpatrick

All the modems I've used have a tiny speaker on the board to generate the
VOX on the phone line. The volume of this little speaker is adjusted
via commands to the modem for off, low, medium or high.

What ever the speaker used for output, it sounds like the volume control
for the modem is set to off.

  Doug.

The normal at commands to adjust the onboard speaker are atM0 (zero==off)
up to atM4 for different volume levels (if supported).

    re: .1

like I said, depends on the modem. I've got one of each, course
    one is an ancient 2400.

The newer 28.8 is M for on/off, L for volume.

as always check your modem documentation. AT compatible doesn't always
    mean 'standard'.
