201.246Fatal Error: What does it mean?JOKUR::FALKOFMon Mar 03 1997 12:1138
Last night, my Starion 910 resumed some flaky action. I had experienced some
hangups a few weeks ago that were similar to those preceding a disk crash, for
which I had the disk replaced about 3 months ago. Here is the situation:

My daughter was writing a paper in Word; no other application was open at
the time. Operating system = W95. I could hear the disk head park itself
once during her typing. Shortly, the disk spun down, and the screen froze.
The disk activity light on the system box stayed on steadily.

After about two minutes of frozen screen, I was about to do crtl-alt-del when
the system did if for me! I got the blue screen and an error message:

"Fatal exception 0E occurred at 0028: C0224109 in VXD VMM (0C) + 00001109"

It gave me the option of another ctrl-alt-del to restart (remember, I didn't
do it in the first place!) or press any key to kill the current application and
lose the current info.

I chose to press any key and, to my surprise, I was brought right back in to
Word right where we left off and the keyboard buffer filled in the few extra
keystrokes that did not get written the first time.

She continued writing for another 20 or so minutes without problem. However,
as we printed her paper, we got a message in a window that a problem was found
with the registry and the computer wanted to fix the registry. I clicked the
box to reinitialize (I think that was the word it used).

The system rebooted, I used the machine to check an email account for a few
minutes and then turned it off.

QUESTION:
Can anyone tell me what happened, please? Is my disk failing and this was a
warning sign? I have not loaded new software (programs or external files)
in months, so I do not suspect a virus; I did run Sweep a few weeks ago and
all was ok.

    Thanks for any input,
    ERIC

I bought a new system around 1/1/97. I do not remember when but lets
say about 6 to 7 weeks ago I got a similar error and W95 wanted to
restore the registry file from a backup. I told it to do so and have
    not had a problem since.

I do not recall what was running at the time it happened but I remember
being concerned that I was going to have lots of problems (but I did
    not).

I think it is a W95 problem more so that a hardware problem.

But I am no expert and this is my logical guess. Regards. Mark
201.248Further updateJOKUR::FALKOFWed Mar 05 1997 15:5618
Thanks for the confident comment, Mark. I called PCscompleat (under
warrantee) and they said the Fate 0E error is a memory error, possibly
the application wanted to go to somewhere in memory that the disk could
not get to at that moment. It was suggested to run Scandisk and Defrag.

I ran Scandisk and it found a lot of corrupt files in my Temp
directory, so I deleted them, but not bad blocks. Before running Defrag,
it told me my disk was only 2% fragmented and recommended not to do it,
    so I didn't.

Anyhow, the hangups continue plus I can hear the disk spinning down,
screen locks, registry wants to initialize, plus I hear a boinging
sound from inside the disk. Therefore, I think my problem is more disk
related. I'm plannig to have the disk replaced (again) under warrantee
and we'll see what happens next!

    Thanks again for the reply.

I would think that defraging a disk that has been known to spin itself
down would put your data in a rather precarious position. Just my 2
    cents.

Can anyone recommend somewhere that can fix monitors in Northern
Mass/Southern New Hampshire? Or is a generic TV repair shop likely to
have the appropriate signal generators to test out a monitor?
