342.0. "HSM Repack hang..." by CSC32::BSS::SAUL () Mon May 26 1997 15:59

    Hi,

    I have a customer trying this command...

    $ smu repack 1/to=2/nothresh/list

    He says nothing is happening. I've included some information below.
    Note that they are using a Storage Tek Silo and DCSC. I've included
    the trace log from DCSC as well. If you aren't familiar with them, its
    telling us that we have requested and recevied information back from
    the silo server on the drives and volumes that we want to use. There
    is however no request from SLS/MDMS to load and mount the drives. Any
    ideas?  Thanks...

    Ted

Hello Ted.

    1.	HSM$DEFAULT_SHELF is configured with a single archive class. This
	should be changed to include at least archive classes, for data
	protection.

    2.	The repack subprocess has retrieved that volume info for input tapes
	QO0000, QO0003 and QO0005. It should have allocated and loaded a new
	tape for archive class 2, which I don't see in the SHP_AUDIT.LOG you
	posted. The OPCOM message shows HSM is stalled on a drive reservation
	for QO0005. I can not tell exactly why, without seeing the HSM device
	configuation (SMU SHOW DEVICE *). Chances are that more drives need
	to be associated with archive class 1.

	Are there more requests, such as ALLOCATE and LOAD in the Audit log
	file?

    3.	Since no I/O is taking place, it is safe to STOP/ID the repack sub-
	process, which is probably named HSM$SERVER_1. To confirm this, a
	SHOW PROCESS will list HSM$ARP.EXE as the current image. The repack
	will error-out and the devices can then be configured.

Hope this helps,
/Paul
