For any Joni Mitchell fans out there, here's the cut lineup for a Joni
Mitchell [commuting tape] compilation I just finished. I think it's a
great pair of tapes, myself. These cuts together tell a worthwhile story
-- makes me wish someone would undertake a commercial boxed anthology.

I started with a list of the cuts Joni Mitchell herself chose to reprise
in live or hits releases -- "Miles of Aisles", "Shadows & Light" (LP/tape
version), "Hits", and "Misses". Then I added a few (marked with + below).

======================================================================

Initially I stopped at 1976, but expanded through 1980 after hearing the
"Shadows & Light" live album, a fine live set (maybe better even than
"Miles of Aisles") which opened my ears to songs on the "Hissing of Summer
  Lawns" and "Mingus" albums.

I may well do a 3rd tape that would bring it up to the present... - Jay

Every thime these a mention ogf Joni Mitchell I just can't help but
write. It's amazing that after SOOO many years and so many listen's I
still enjoy almost every CD as much now as I did then. This includes
    her new stuff as well.

She is one truly great artist, her work stands up to the test of time
    (at least to my ears).

  I agree (I guess that's obvious).

I think one of her defining moments was when she followed "Court & Spark",
probably her commercial peak (so far), with "Hissing of Summer Lawns".

(Similar to when Neil Young followed "Harvest" with "Time Fades Away"...
A definite turning away from stardom, feelings of revulsion, probably fear
  of losing control...)

I actually tend to prefer some of her more commercially oriented releases
-- "Hejira" over "Mingus", for example -- but the fact that she retreats
from the "star making machinery" for periods of time makes all the
  difference, IMO.

I appreciate her even more now that "Shadows & Light" showed me that her
jazz ditherings could work as live, group-oriented, musical art &
entertainment. Maybe she learned more from Charles Mingus than it seemed
at first -- Mingus was at least as talented at small-group leading
(approaching the level of a Miles Davis or Art Blakey) as he was at bass
  playing and composing. - Jay
