    Red tailed hawk being mobbed by ravens as it sat on a lamp-post
    here in the parking lot at the Littleton facility.

    Saw a northern goshawk on Saturday. It flew to four different places in
    the yard before disappearing into the woods. Each time it moved, it was
    shadowed by three or four bluejays, who kept about a 20-foot distance
    while in flight. When the goshawk landed, the jays would land within
    five feet or so, on a different branch. _All_ groundfeeding activity
    stopped while this guy was in the area.

    Does anyone know what the jays were doing? They didn't seem very
    aggressive -- it didn't look at all like songbirds pecking at a
    low/slow hawk.

643.3Quiet winter woods (Mass. USA)ASDG::BECHTLERTue Feb 11 1997 12:4623
    Sunday was a beautiful day, sunny, about 35 F, just a little crunchy
    snow underfoot. I took a walk at my favorite summer haunt, Delaney
    Wildlife Management Area in Stow, Mass. (USA). The lake was solidly
    frozen, with ice fishermen and ice skaters in evidence.

    It was VERY quiet in the woods (of course, that's partially why I go
    there). I heard chickadees, a red-breasted nuthatch, a cardinal, and
    some woodpecker drumming -- but never got a look at any of them. Even
    the chickadees wouldn't come in response to pishing (which they do
    reliably in summer).

    In the marsh I was surprised to hear some "cheeps" from the reeds
    sticking up above the ice. Two swamp sparrows! Seems a bit north of
    their usual wintering range, but it _has_ been a mild winter.

    Near the road on the drive out, I saw a Sharp-Shinned hawk perched high
    in a tree, and a Red-Tailed Hawk soaring.

    All in all, nothing like coastal birding in Mass. in the winter, but a
    pleasantly solitary walk on a sunny winter day.

643.5Bluebird back already?LJSRV1::FURBECKSINK: Single Income, Numerous KidsWed Feb 19 1997 13:415
    My Mother-in-law reports "the" bluebird couple has returned to her
    box. Is it "the" or "a" ?? He's been singing up storm. She called
    the Acton (Mass) Conservation Comm (who put up the box for her) and they
    said to put out some plain suet for them. She's hoping for another
    summer with them!
643.6NW Toronto, CanadaTROOA::TEMPLETONOne fine day......SpringWed Feb 26 1997 14:3117
    We pass a beautiful home with a large pond on the way to and from the
    office every day, last fall I noticed a pair of swans on this pond,
    now the day is longer I can see they have wintered over, the home owner
    must have put a pool heater in one corner of the pond because it is a
    very neat round hole, no matter how cold the temperature gets it is
    there.
    This morning I noticed a few other birds had arrived, the geese I can
    recognize because they are large but because I look down on the pond from
    quite a height I could not make out the other birds that were there as they
    were much smaller than the Geese and swans, also they looked to be
    black but that could just be because at that time of the morning the
    trees cast shadow over the pond.
    Other than the Red Tail Hawks and Crows there does not seem to be much
    action around right now, even my back yard feeders did not get as many
    visitors this winter.

643.7Blue Heron, no doubt about it.NETCAD::CREEGANFri Feb 28 1997 15:296
    Yesterday, around 2:30 PM saw a blue heron standing on
    one of the nests at the rookery next to Kimball's Farm
    less than a mile from the LKG facility. What does it
    eat this EARLY in the sesson? Most ponds and lakes
    are only beginning to melt and we can still get belted
    with more snow.
