321.0. "LSE/CMS fetch being truncated." by CSC32::EHA (Flip) Wed Mar 26 1997 14:59

    Hello,

    I have a customer that didn't read the SPD and installed DECset 12.1 on
    a VAX and Alpha VMS systems. He is trying to FETCH and source file
    form CMS and he is getting and error "line truncated to 65535" when he
    fetches large files. What I want to know is, has this been fixed on
    the DECset 12.2 fieldtest and will it be working on the release in
    Septemberish?

    Thank you!

321.1Unfortunately notEDSDS6::WANGJames - DECset EngineeringWed Mar 26 1997 17:0710
At present, a line in a buffer can contain up to 64k characters on DEC Test
Processing Utility(DEC TPU). TPU truncates all characters after 64K characters
if you try to read a file that contains lines longer than 64K. Since LSE is
layered on the TPU, so LSE also has this limit.

I don't think there is any change for this limit in DECset 12.2.

Hi Al,

I may misunderstood your question.

->He is trying to FETCH and source file
->form CMS and he is getting and error "line truncated to 65535" when he
->fetches large files.

Is the problem that LSE can't edit this file, or when the file is fetched it's
put into an LSE buffer ?

What does he usually use to edit this file ?

321.3Do you want more info? :-)CSC32::EHAFlipThu Mar 27 1997 15:4615
    Hi James,

    It seems that if the user fetches a file from CMS and then edits it in
    LSE it works fine. It seems that the user has modified LST so that if
    the file does not exist in the current directory, they will fetch from
    the cms library automaticaly. According to them it was working before
    the VMS upgrade.

    Since they have modified the section file, I am not sure that you have
    to support this feature. I am wondering if there is a way the fetch
    from CMS could be messed up by the user? Do you want more information
    on how they modified the section file?

    Thank you!

We will support them since they only made a minor change, but I need more
information:

   1. How big is the file ?

   2. What's the error message precisely?

   3. What happen if they include the big.file into buffer :

	$ LSEDIT temp.txt
        CTR-Z
        LSE> include big.file

   Thanks,
