319.0. "Can't install DECSET on Alpha" by TLE::REAGAN (All of this chaos makes perfect sense) Sat Feb 22 1997 12:24

I just got a new OpenVMS Alpha machine. I tried to install
DECSET 12.1 from the latest CDROM distribution. The savesets were
    from from 30-Apr-1996.

The installation told me that I needed to install on a VAX. It also
got a handful of DCL errors not being able to find certain error
    labels.

Should the DECSET121.% savesets install on an Alpha machine?

    sigh.

What is the Volume Label on your CD-ROMS?

For OpenVMS Alpha system, your DECSET 12.1 should be contained on the OpenVMS
Alpha Software Product Library CD-ROMs.

Good catch. The way my system managers have their logicals pointing
to our CDROM farm, I got confused and picked up the wrong kit. It
is working if I don't use their logical search list to find the kit...

Much better. I found the right savesets :-)

However, when I installed it, it failed near the end with insufficient
global pages trying to run the startups. I thought that most of the
products checked ahead of time for sufficient global pages, etc. and
didn't just fail at the end. I'm not sure if the installation finished
(ie, all the files are in the right places and I just need up increase
my global pages, autogen, reboot, OR, if I need to reinstall after I
    increase my global pages...)

You should increase your global pages first, then rerun the startup. There is
no need to reinstall.

BTW: Which product was failed during installation.
