3281.0. "DHCP and IP Address ?" by ULYSSE::DENIS (michel Denis) Mon May 05 1997 07:36

    Hello,

From a PC running Win95, a client needs to access Alpha UNIX
    applications, over TCP/IP.

As the PC is using DHCP in the net, there is no "fixed" IP address for
the PC. We were told that it is "dynamic" !?!

Question: what do we have to enter in "/etc/hosts" on the Unix host
as IP address for the PC (or is the name enough) ?

    Thank you,
    michel

Normally the PC doesn't have to be defined in /etc/hosts at all.
When you start applications from the PC, the address of the PC gets
sent to the remote host. So there's no need for the Unix system to resolve
the PC's address. It already has it.
