3247.0. "eXcursion on Windows 95 without a network?" by SANITY::LEMONS (And we thank you for your support.) Mon Mar 03 1997 12:46

    Hi

We have a Win32 application that (having been ported from on OpenVMS)
still uses X Windows as its display mechanism. We want to run this
application on Windows 95, and use eXcursion as its X server. Further,
we would like to do this on Windows 95 systems that may not be actively
using a network connection, so may not have IP or another network
protocol active at the time of display. Is there a way to have
eXcursion work locally, without a running network connection?

    Thanks!

eXcursion expects to find a network. Unless things have changed very recently
there is no truly local transport. Even the so-called "local" transport is
going to use the TCP/IP (or DECnet) interface. At one point I was using
a PC running NT at home with eXcursion and eXcursion SDK to write X programs
on NT. In order to make it all work I put a NIC with a terminated tee in
the system. During one of the SDK field tests there was a local-only
X server bundled in, but I don't think that ever saw the light of day as a
part of the product.

Windows NT has a "Local Loopback" adapter that can be used in place
of a real NIC. I have heard of, but never actually seen, a local
loopback adapter for Windows 95. I don't know where to find it, if
it actually exists.
