3620.0. "NCL over TCP/IP" by BIKINI::DITE (John Dite@RTO) Wed Apr 30 1997 08:43

I'm trying to use NCL (DEC CMIP) over TCP/IP from a Digital UNIX system.

Access using the host name of the DECNIS works.
Access using the address leads to the message
ncl>sho node 16.185.8.9 name

'CONNECT ERROR: Unrecognized node name'.

Section 1.9.3.1 of the DECNIS management guide says:

"If an IP address or DECnet PhaseIV address is used to specify the the node
being managed, it is interpreted either as an IP address or as a DECnet address
on the basis of its syntax."

Unfortunately there is no example in the documentation.

Can someone remind me of the address syntax I can use on Digital UNIX.

If someone is going to update the documentation with an example could the
dnacml port (436/tcp) be included in table 7-2 (Chapter Packet Priotization on
the DECNIS). It would also be helpful to include this table in Chapter 13
IP Packet Filtering.

Does anyone know whether DECnetPlus for OpenVMS will include this functionality
in the future (ie. in combination with UCX) ?

3620.1The syntax looks OKMARVIN::GLANVILLEWed Apr 30 1997 09:477

    The command that you are using looks OK to me.
    It looks like the version of NCL that you are
    using does not support CMIP over TCP.

3620.2Transport=TCP is already setBIKINI::DITEJohn Dite@RTOWed Apr 30 1997 12:0310
Richard,

	it does if I use the host name, but not with the address syntax.
I checked this with tcpdump. In addition if you can set the ncl attribute
Transport=TCP (on the UNIX system) then one would expect it to work ;-). I know
I should really be asking this in the DECnet for Digital UNIX conference, but
as someone wrote that particular passage in the DECNIS management manual I
thought someone here would know.

According to DECnet/OSI for Digital UNIX engineering IP address syntax
cannot be used (yet).

Extract out of the DECnet/OSI for Digital UNIX notes conference:

Maybe the management manual could be changed to reflect that this IP
address feature is only available in some later(?) version of DECnet/OSI
for Digital UNIX.
