3610.0. "10.16.0.0 is it the zero subnet of mask 255.255.240.0?" by SNOFS1::63496::CHIUANDREW () Fri Apr 18 1997 05:09

    Hi,

    Just a simple question on IP subnet:

    Customer is using Ip addresses in 10.16.0.0 mask is 255.255.240.0 for
    LAN backbone and other block addresses in 10.16.248.0 mask
    255.255.248.0,
    they have a DECnis with ip address 10.16.15.254 running ospf, this
    address DOES FALL into 1st subnet of 10.16.0.0, when mask is 255.255.240.0
    is it correct?

    Reason, is some PC client CANNOT handle ip subnet-zero, just before we
    start to look into the problem, can someone IP expert confirm that
    10.16.0.0 with mask 255.255.240.0 IS or IS NOT 1st subnet in that
    block?

    thanks and regards,
    Andrew Chiu - NSIS Sydney

It is:

IP address:     10.16.15.254
Network mask:   255.255.240.0
Broadcast mask: 10.16.15.255
Network number: 10.16.0.0

3610.2is 10.16.0.0 is a subnet-zero ?SNOFS1::63496::CHIUANDREWSun Apr 20 1997 23:5114
    re .1,

    tnanks,

    My questions should be is 10.16.0.0, is it a subnet zero ip subnet?

    I think it is not, since 10.0.0.0 is the first subnet (subnet zero)
    with mask 255.255.240.0, but 10.16.0.0 is xxxth subnet in 10.0.0.0,
    is it correct?

    thanks again for any help/idea!

	No, its subnet number 0x100 (256).

	10.0.16.0 is subnet number 1

	10.0.0.0 is subnet number 0

3610.4thanks, that's good news!SNOFS1::63496::CHIUANDREWMon Apr 21 1997 23:297
    re .3

    thanks a lot, customer is complaint that we use IP subnet zero for
    their backbone network and thanks again for your clarification.
