3279.0. "5-4-3 repeater rule in DECstack" by NCMAIL::SCHEID () Wed Feb 14 1996 16:31

    A customer just asked the following question ... does the 5-4-3 rule still
    apply when in a DECstack or is it one logical repeater and one segment

    Here is config

    PC --- 10BASET -- DETML
    			|
    			|thinwire
    			|
    PC ---- 10BASET ---DETML

    I see this as 2 repeaters, 3 segments, 1 of which is coaxial

    The 5-4-3 rule does apply here and I see it as 2 repeaters, 3
    segments and all three counting toward the 3 coax limit. You have to
    account for these 2 10baseT segments in the coax limit otherwise you could
    build a net like this, which is clearly illegal -

        PC--10baseT--R--coax--R--coax--R--coax--R--10baseT--PC

3279.2All coax segments in stack = 1 coax under 5-4-3 ruleNCMAIL::SCHEIDWed Feb 14 1996 17:2821
    I'm confused ...

    I did'nt explain this well enough

    PC #1 is connected via utp cable (seg #1) to a 90T16 repeater (repeater
    #1) which is connected via Coax (seg #2, coax segment #1) to a another
    90T16 (repeater #2) which connects via UTP(seg #3) the second PC

    2 repeaters 3 Segs 1 of which is coax ...

    Bill,
    based on your initial reply what if we had a stack of 12 repeaters
    does each coax segment connecting members of the stack count towards
    coax segments under the 5-4-3 rule ...

    I hope not ... we advertise these stacks as being able to have up 232
    ports ...

    that is the case
    trouble...
3279.3NETdesigner V1.9 tool says config is OKNETCAD::BRAGDONWed Feb 14 1996 18:128
    I just ran the 3279.0 config through the NETdesigner V1.9 tool.
    It validated the config: 2 repeaters, 1 mixing segment, 2 links,
    with the assumption that no maximum lengths were exceeded.

    The config in 3279.1 also gets analyzed as legal, again using the
    NETdesigner V1.9 tool, which just came out in BETA release.
