3775.0. "DECSwitch 900EE in Unknown state" by MLNCSC::CAREMISE (and then they were ...four !) Tue Aug 06 1996 09:33

On my customer site I'm experiencing a strange behaviour on one
of the ten DecHub900 that we have on the net :

The module in slot 8 (the one used for the IP in-band mgmnt) goes in
Unknown state, at least 2 times a week, with no apparently good reasons.

When this happens , everything continues to work properly and the only
'failure' is the reachability of the Hub from the management station
viewpoint , with associated alarms and so on...

The module is a DecSwitch 900EE at the latest FW. rev.
The MAM and all the other modules are also at the latest available FW rev.

After having swapped all the HW. components, we are starting to think on
a configuration problem. We have the Hub connected to the rest of the net
through a DecConcentrator 500--> DecBridge 620-->DELNI-->DecSwitch 900EE
(on thick wire port 6) . This is because this Hub doesn't have an FDDI
module to connect directly on the FDDI backbone, and the customer wants
to recycle the old Concentrator/Bridge for FDDI -->Ethernet conversion.

Inside the hub, there are 1 PortSwitch 900CP (connected to a virtual lan on
port 2 of the DecSwitch 900EE) and two DecRepeaters 900TM (connected to
virtual Lan's on ports 3 and 4 of the Switch)

Does anyone can tell us if the configuration is supported or if can introduce
problems like the one experienced ?

Anyone's help will be a lot appreciated !

3775.1A short set of questions to consider...NETCAD::BATTERSBYTue Aug 06 1996 13:3921
Can you check the 900EE for any error log entries and post
    them.

Even though you've said that your customer's modules & HUB
are at the lates rev, you may want to post the firmware
revs anyhow, just as a sanity check. There may not be any
relevance or significance, but it's helpful when people
may make an attempt at re-creating your configuration, or
as a means of being able to discount certain possibilities.
(Don't forget to include the revs of the DECConcentrator 500
    and DECbridge 620).

Does your customer see any relevance to the time of day or
some other operation that seems to track or be coincident
with when the 900EE switch hangs (goes in unknown state as
    you put it)?

Do you know what kind of protocols are being used in the network
    configuration you described?

From the base note it sounds like everything recovers from the
Unknown state except for management access to the hub. This is
a known problem in cases where devices have several quick transitions
between Up and Unknown.

Did you know you can have up to 3 in-band Ip addresses for the
hub, each served by a different module?

Try using one of the repeaters as your In-Band IP server. If you
have more addresses available, use another repeater and the
DECswitch as alternates.

	Hi
I'm repling for Sergio because he's on holiday this week.
Thanks to both for your reply, following some of the info You require.

Not immediatly. The customer is on holiday till 19th of August.

>Even though you've said that your customer's modules & HUB

  DMHUB 4.1.2
  900EE 1.1.1
  900TM 2.0.0
  900CP 2.1.0
The revs for decbridge 620 and decconcentrator 500 will be checked
  on 19th of August.

>Does your customer see any relevance to the time of day or
>some other operation that seems to track or be coincident

No, they discover the switch has gone just when they try to ping it or
when they try to manage it with Hubwatch (no answer from the agent).

>Do you know what kind of protocols are being used in the network
>configuration you described?

We can't trace the FDDI, but we can trace the lan via Repeater 900TM,
and ask to the customer which protocols they are using.

  Could you explain better.

  We'll try.

So the 19th of august me and Sergio will go to the customer to implement theese
action.

There was never a DMHUB V4.1.2. Ask your customer again,
and make sure he gives the exact full version number,
including letters.

900EE 1.1.1 doesn't look too cool either - really old or
really wrong.

Ok, as I stated in the previous reply, the customer is on holiday all this week.
Next week I'll check on field all the revision, the error log dump and the full
hub configuration. Also the trace for lan traffic will be take.

	Thanks.

    Hi all,

I agree with v4.1.2 never seen for the DMHUB but the DECswitch 900EE
has V1.1.1 (DEBMP111.BIN) as latest version available.

    Hope it helps clarify versions

3775.7The DEBMP111.BIN image I don't think supports vlansNETCAD::BATTERSBYTue Aug 13 1996 14:429
The DEBMP111.BIN image should be ok, except that it doesn't support
virtual lans. The image for the 900EE that will support virtual
lans I don't think is available yet. The base note made some
reference to using a virtual lan on one of the 900EE ports, so
maybe there has been an assumption somewhere that the v111 image
for the 900EE supports virtual lans. Someone please correct me
    if I'm wrong.

3775.10Hot hub!NETCAD::MILLBRANDTanswer mamMon Aug 19 1996 15:2215
You're running with a too-warm hub. The MAM Temp Yellow warnings are current and
are being reported fast and furious. They have used up all the error log entries,
making it impossible to see how long this has been going on, or whether there were
other errors. The high Entry Number means there have been 40647 other errors logged
over the lifetime of the hub, but most have not resulted in resets, so this Temp
Yellow thing could have been going on a long time.

There is nothing in the logs to indicate why management access from slot 8 went
away. From the hub's point of view, it is Active. However, the power failure
may have restored the module's connectivity.

You should look further into Bob Battersby's earlier comment about the DECswitch900 EE
not supporting virtual lans.

3775.11some additional infos neededMLNCSC::CAREMISEand then they were ...four !Wed Aug 21 1996 08:5624
The problem regarding the temperature too high is related to a
situation of cooling missing in the computer room, but has been
            resolved in June.

I would like to have more specific infos on the support of the
virtual Lan's on the DECSwitch ( I was supposing that the limi-
    	tation
was for the the PE Switches, not for the Bridges....) : my sales
rep. sold this modules , sure of the functionality of the VLans!
Can someone point me to specific documentation were this fact is
        asserted and justified technically ?

Regarding the FW rev of the switch , Vers. 1.1.1 is the one and only
I can find on the Official Digital FTP sites :

            http://www.networks.digital.com/dr/hubs/firmware/
            http://npbww2.hpn.lkg.dec.com:80/dr/hubs/firmware/

Any pointer to other sites are welcome.

        Thank you all. Sergio.

P.S. Firmware rev. of the Bridges 510 and 620 is BL 1.3

V1.1.1 for the 900EE will not get you VLAN
although it is the latest code.

You need V1.7 which will be out soon.

Your DEC BRIDGE 510 and 620 code is old!!
See note 837.* in upsar::fddi conference
on how to get the latest code.

3775.13Vlan vs Switched lanANNUPE::SOTTOCORNOThu Aug 22 1996 08:367
In the .0 Sergio refers to Vlans configured on 900EE, but those are Switched
lans on Hub's backplane. A lan connect the 1st Repeater, the 2nd one connect the
second repeater, the 3rd connect to a channel on 900cp, the last connect the
thinwire.
I think this configuration is supported by the fw 1.1.1

The Bridge and concentartor Fws have been upgraded to:

	Decconcentrator 500 = V3.3
	DecBridge610	    = V1.6

reply to .12,

Ken,

I got confirmation that VLAN support was not added to the 900EE.
