347.0. "Token ring-Ethernet bridging on DEChub 900?" by ZPOVC::INDO03::FUNGSIONG (Digital Indonesia - Networks) Fri Aug 20 1993 10:34

    Hallo,

I read from DEChub 900 announcement that the DECmau 900TL allows
connection for Token Ring nodes with the Ethernet nodes.

Does the DEChub 900 backplane has the bridging capabilities similar to
the Proteon Token-Ring to Ethernet bridge? Is it protocol transparent?

Does it mean that if I have Novell client on Token ring and PATHWORKS
server on Ethernet, using this product and NetWare Coexistence
the Novell clients can connect to the PATHWORKS server?

                     DEChub 900

If it is, we have a great product! Some customers (IBM based) require
access to our Ethernet-based servers from existing Token ring
network. This will give them the solution at very reasonable price.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Fung Siong

347.1Bridge is RequiredDELNI::BOUCHARDFri Aug 20 1993 19:159
We've had a miscommunication. Neither the DECmau 900TL nor the DEChub
900MS Backplane has an integral bridge. To get from Ethernet to Token
Ring, a bridge is required. Our recommendation for a Digital solution
is the Proteon 4100 or CNX.

Im sorry you were misled. Can you point out to me where you saw this so
    it can be corrected?

    Thanks, Mike

    Hallo Mike,

This is the article I got from NAC::, file name is
DECHUB900_FINAL_SUS.TXT. I have hightlighted the parts that might be
misunderstood, at least by me :-). The word "integrate" suggests that
all the FDDI, Ethernet, and Token Ring can talk with each other using
this new hub (which, unfortunately, can't). I might be wrong, though.

    Thanks for the info, anyway.

    Regards,
    Fung Siong

The article is misleading to many Sales folks also. Most everyone in
the computing business today thinks of "both cableplant and protocols"
    when some says the network.

The statements in the article would be clearer and less confusing if
they stated that the "DEChub 900 makes it easy to integrate token ring,
    ethernet and FDDI cableplants".

But this would be sort of boring also, since this is nothing new to the
    industry.

Maybe if you could find a way to comme up with a module that fits into
the hub that could handle briding/routing of token ring, ethernet and
FDDI, you could have a product which sold itself and the Volume folks
and VARs would fight to get.
