1202.0. "PROBEwatch on OSF1 ?" by ZTOIS1::VISTA (Renato VISTA, MCS/SPS France/Strasbourg) Mon Jul 11 1994 07:17

    Hi,

Working around POLYCENTER Manager ON NETview for OSF1 for several
customers, I've demonstrated the interest of using HUBwatch &
PROBEwatch (in addition to the DECpacketprobe90).

It is possible to know the availability date of both PROBEwatch FT &
    SSB kit ?
In a previous NOTE, I've read that the HUBwatch package might also
include PROBEwatch. Will it be concreat ?

    Thank for your replies.

In the future (V4 or later) PROBEwatch will be launchable by HUBwatch, but
I haven't heard anything about packaging the two of them together.

1202.3PROBEwatch for OSF - tbdNAC::FORRESTMon Jul 11 1994 21:447
I can't give you a PROBEwatch for OSF date anymore; the money to
pay for porting it got cut from the FY95 budget. I'm looking for
alternative means of paying for the port, but I don't have the
	answer yet.

Monitor NAC::NIPG:[MANAGE]STATUS.TXT for a new date.
1202.4OSF/1 VERY important !!MFRNW1::SCHUSTERKarl Schuster @UFC OMS/Network Services MunichWed Jul 13 1994 11:0710
We have a lot of customers which are very interested in Probewatch.
I have shown probewatch to several customers on Ultrix. But they do not
want Ultrix, they need either OSF/1 ( Netview customers, new Digital
customers ), or VMS ( DECmcc customers ).
Probewatch for Ultrix is a dead product, in the eyes of most customers.

If we want to make business, we need OSF/1 and VMS versions.

Karl

Hey guys,

What line do we follow? What strategie do we have? Whats going on with you?

We have to tell our customer that OSF is the future, OSF its the way ....
We sell integrated tools, but we do not get the integration. Is it better to
sell HP OPENview for the future? As I know they are able to integrate!! Jack,
do you know how many projects are decided about Management. If we are not able
to do such easy things like port a ULTRIX SW to OSF (Our marketing tells to all
customer how easy this is), we should better finish the shutdown.

Please Jack could you give us some words about your strategie? What should we
sell in the future? What should we tell the customer. Here in Switzerland we
have some customers, just waiting for the OSF version. They desided to buy
Polycenter and not HP or SUN, because they belived in DEC ???!!!........

Here in the U.K. we have similar issues to thise mentioned in .-1.

We have an evaulation unit on-site at Glaxo U.K. running NetView and
customers top priority is ProbeWATCH.. We need the OSF/1 version asap.
November is too late. HP OpenView has already been evaulated and
implemented in the rest of the Glaxo organisation.

Please keep us informed of progess of the port and any influence that
large global account groups can assert to speed this process.

1202.7What is this ?COMBAT::JONSSONLars JonssonTue Aug 02 1994 14:296
I strongly agree with Roland (note 1205.5). We've been telling customers that
OSF/1 is the platform for network management, and now you tell us we can't
afford to port Probewatch. In my opinion, if we intend to stay in the network
management business, we cant afford NOT to port Probewatch.

I also can not believe this. I work on a facilities management contract
that is worth millions to DEC every year. We must deliver quality
management of the customers network so therefore need good tools.

We had proposed to the customer that we would manage there network with
an integrated solution using netview. Having to run Cisco works has
already meant that we have had to buy a Sun / SunNet Manager to manage
the routers. Now this probe is looking a bit like it also will not fit
our view for managing the network.

Managing the network with Netview, DECmcc and SunNet Manager is proving
to be a major overhead when I think we can do it all with SunNet
    Manager.

This is going to make it very hard for the sales people around here to
sell network management tools to any customers when we do not use the
tools ourselves to manage large networks.

If you need a solution today, you might want to use TEC Netprofessor
or RMON probes. It runs under OSF/1 and is integrated with Netview. It
also is up to three ports so you can manage three segments with one
probe (nice since ours can't channel hop).

John,

Me too with my UK customer. Further more, with the evaluation unit, they
have stated 'PNV is the best IP management tool we have evaluated, much
better than HP OV'. We're suceeding with the base unit but where's the
value add appns?

> Managing the network with Netview, DECmcc and SunNet Manager is proving

Same issue, along with needing CiscoWorks, Optivity, (given these companies
don't want to Tango at present), Hubwatch, ProbeWatch,
the whole gambit! Also, we need to be building RMON into the actual
hardware (like Cabletron customer is buying as benefit is RMON support
built into unit). BTW, as with rest of replies, don't shoot me,
this is customer feedback on what they need from DEC in the form of a
Netview INTEGRATED platform,

Regards, Martin
1202.11OSF/1 definitely needed!EEMELI::ELOYou can't change the winds, but you can adjust the sailsFri Aug 26 1994 12:2512
In Finland we have demoed ProbeWatch to quite a few customers,
and they have been very interested in it. The problem is that
they do not even consider buying it on Ultrix, but want it on
	OSF/1.

Please give us the product on OSF/1!
