3811.0. "DECmau 900TH and PINGs" by NYOSS1::HERENDEEN (Tom Herendeen, 508-888-3239) Sat Aug 24 1996 02:19

    I have a DECmau 900TH question relating to TCP. A Boston customer has
    two MAU's installed that he can not ping from the other side of a CISCO
    7504 router that connects his token ring to his FDDI backbone. He can
    ping the MAU's from stations on the same token ring AND he can ping
    other systems from those stations and those other systems which CAN NOT
    ping the MAU's can ping the token ring stations. Is that a complicated
    enough problem statement?

    The one oddity that I can see is the customer is using a mask of
    255.255.248.0 with a class B network. Do the 900TH's understand "non
    standard" masks?

    It's too bad that I can't attach a PPT drawing of his network to this
    note.

    Thanks

    One other thing... the MAU's can't be managed by HUBwach/Multi Chassis
    Manager unless the management station is on the same ring. This is
    sort of a critical problem.

    Thanks

    is the cisco router performing source routing? there was a bug report
    on this and code changed, but never released.

    I see no problem with your subnet masking. The MAU does have the
    correct address to be in that subnet?

3811.3more info looks like a Cisco problemNYOSS1::HERENDEENTom Herendeen, 508-888-3239Fri Sep 06 1996 14:2218
    I went on site this week with a sniffer and found out some additional
    information...

    First there is a Cisco Catalyst 1600 Token ring switch in between the
    router and the DECmau. With the sniffer, I could see the ARPs from the
    router going through the 1600; the MAU sending an ARP Reply and the
    1600 dropping the reply on the floor. When I moved the mau to be
    adjacent to the router, every thing works just fine; move it back to
    the other side of the 1600 and nothing works. The customer also
    admitted that they had been getting complaints from users who couldn't
    get to file servers in parts of the building that were served by IBM
    MAU's that had a 1600 in their path.

    My advice to the customer is to call Cisco

    Maybe they should call Bay and get a Centillion 100 switch
