3771.0. "100 Mbs Ethernet" by GIDDAY::STANISLAUS () Mon Aug 05 1996 17:49

Cross Posted in Ethernet Notes conference:
    ---------------------------------------

I work in the CSC and part of my job involves giving Network
Courses CSC staff and MCS engineers - new hires on Network
Troubleshooting - LANs - Ethernet/Token-Ring/FDDI, etc. But I have kept
away from teaching 100MB Ethernet Technology 100Base-VG 100Base-T,F,
etc. until one student in my last class asked for such info and
Digital's position in this technology. I just mentioned that Digital
makes the DE500 - PCI to 10 or 100 Mbs adapter card with auto-sensing
feature based on whether it is connected to a 10 Mbs Repeater or 100
Mbs. I knew there was some product like the PE2000, but
I kept away from saying anything more due to lack of my experise
and knowledge in the 100 Mbs Ethernet area.

To help me in my next class, I am looking for additional
    information as follows:

1)100Base-VG or 100Base-AnyLAN by HP including cost per port at station
    and Hub.

2)100Base-T, 100Base-F by other (which other) Vendors

3)Quartet Signaling Technology and Demand Priority Technology.

4)Repeater Rules for Class I and Class II Repeaters.

5)Any training document, post script, power point files already
available, saving me the trouble of making one up.

6)Apart from the DE500, what other NIC cards and HUB based
repeaters and switches do we make or should I look in the HUB_MGNT
    notes conference.

    7)Any additional information is welcome.

Bay Networks has a 16-port SWITCHED 100BASETX box for $16.5K
    and newcomer
    Hitachi has a 16-port SWITCHED 100BASETX box for $12.5K

Communications week rated BOTH of these boxes very highly for 100baseTX
    to the desktop solutions.
