3719.0. "RMON manager and community name >15 char" by RDMCS3::STUART (Scott Stuart - NPB SE - 410.315.9954) Wed Jul 17 1996 16:10

    I have a few questions about RMON manager:

     RMON  manager
        1) It looks like it will only take a 15 character community
        string, either read-only or read/write. This is a problem as my
        customter (DuPont) has set up write community strings to be >15
        characters. I belive that SNMP allows for up to 32 characaters.

        Is this a know problem and what is the solution?

        2) In order to use RMON manager for a DECswitch do I have to give the
        switch it's own IP address or is there a way to get to it via the hub
        manager using RMON manager?

    regards,
    scott

Actually, none of the SNMP RFCs define the length of the community string.
That's why your customer is having this problem.

You have to give the switch it's own IP address to use RMON manager.

(You can get the "free" RMON alarms, events, statistics and history
information going through the Hub's Management Agent Module - which means
you do not have to give the switch its own IP address.)

    so the answer is that they only support 15 character community strings
    and have no plan on changing this?

    It seems that a larger length would be nice since we support more on
    the DEChub.

    thanks

3719.3*Still* no answer to question #1!NETCAD::GALLAGHERThu Jul 18 1996 13:0312

Why would you assume that was the answer when:

	- I didn't say that or anything like it,
	- I titled my reply "Answer to #2", trying to indicate that
	  I didn't have the answer to question #1. I only mentioned
	  the community string length not being specified as an aside.

I don't know the answer to question #1.
