3690.0. "ClearVision Support for the DECnis" by CSC32::L_DEGROFF () Tue Jul 09 1996 18:52

    Have a customer who states that the ClearVision Product Overview says that
    ClearVision will include management for the DECnis in a future release.
    Please verify that this is correct and when will this capability be
    available. Also, customer wants to be a Beta tester of the product.

    Thanks,

    However, isn't that only for certain protocols? Or does it support
    DECnet, OSI, IPX, etc.?

Just for Info:

If you try to monitor a decnis with RM, only IP,IPX and appletalk is supported
in the pie chart.

Since we are using DECnet and IP here in our location only, the pie chart
isn't that usefull for monitoring a decnis.

3690.5Router Configurator V1.0 does not support the DECnisNETCAD::FORINOMon Jul 22 1996 21:528
Re. 1

	The Router Configurator V1.0 does not support
the DECnis - only RouteAbouts and DECswitches with
routing code. DECnis support is being worked on and
will be available in a later release.

3690.6Router Manager support for DECnisNETCAD::FORINOMon Jul 22 1996 22:0536
Router Manager relies on Mib-II and other standard
mibs for most of its functionality. In the case of
DECnis Router Manager should cover the following
functionality:

	FDDI
	Ethernet
	Spanning Tree
	IP
	Chassis Info
	Box map
	Discovery
	IP Path tracing

There is no support for

	IPX Path Tracing
	Accounting
	IPX
	Appletalk
	DECnet
	Frame Relay
	X.25
	Source Route Bridging

Router Manager was developed to work primarily with the
RouteAbout and DECswitch routers. Any support that you
got for DECnis was by default and no specific work was
planned (or is planned) for DECnis. Likewise, because
Router Manager supported CISCO there is also a lot of
coverage for the DECBrouter 90 family.

PS. Can the person who had problems with IP Path
     tracing supply a few more details for the problem?

    RE: -.last few

    It sounds like we ALL want to avoid selling DECnis Routers since network
    management software (clearVISN) is not currently supporting
    (and none planned) going to address the DECnis products now or in
    the future.

    Ouch. Yikes!

    There is a DECNIS Configurator due out before end of this year - discussed
    more in the Notes conference MARVIN::DECNIS_GUI.

RE -.7

	The issue is not the network management support
you get for DECNIS in Router Manager. The issue is the
level of SNMP support you get from the DECnis itself.
3690.10In FY98 we'll have a Saleable Routing StrategyJULIET::yosmte::HARRIS_MASales Executive IIWed Jul 31 1996 17:0122
    RE: -.1

    Oh, I totally agree. It's the Router itself. I think NPBU stopped
    significant investments into the DECnis way before the RouteAbout and
    clearVISN and SNMP era started. Perhaps a year or more. Too bad, since
    we basically have no SALEABLE "Routing Strategy" as such today. Just a
    bunch of fairly un-related varying size shape feature boxes. Yes, they all
    speak OSPF and RIP, but not too much else in common. Not feature set,
    not management, etc. We could say Cisco, Bay and 3com are all the same
    'family' for that matter...

    I realize that RouteAbout is the direction, but we clearly DO NOT have
    a family yet. Even the code in the 900EF is very lightly sold due to
    performance issues being hit over our heads anytime we started getting
    excited about using it as a solution.

    The finger is not pointing to clearVISN engineering, but much closer
    to the AC power cord!
