3668.0. "Intermittent Agent problems" by PHHSS1::DMIGNOGNA () Fri Jun 28 1996 20:31

Experiencing two problems intermittently. Customer not real happy

1. No Response from agent
2. System generated error on DECswitch 900EF

Need help in defining, fixing and explaining the problem

Background info:

Prison Campus has 33 Hub900's on a FDDI ring. Customer checks the Hubs and
FDDI ring status every Monday by using hubwatch and connecting to every other
Hub. Time to walk from the PC management station to a Hub is typically 45 mins.
Site has been fully operational for 7 months.

Hub900 configuration:

Slot 8 DECswitch 900EF
Slot 7 DECrepeater 900TM or 90TS (In-band Agent)
Slots 6 - 4 could have additional repeaters or DECserver 900TM or 90M

Revision Levels

Hub900 HW=F, RO=v1.1.6, SW=v4.1.0
DECswitch HW=v1/2, RO=v0.4, SW=v1.5.2
Rep. 90TS HW=v3, RO=v01.00 SW=v2.0.0
Rep. 900TM HW=v3, RO=v01.04 SW=v2.0.0

Management PC = Hubwatch Ver 4.1.1

Problem 1 "No response from agent" (NRA)

Has been seen 4 times this month on 4 different Hubs.
From the community table we select and make current a hub, receive the window
with the NRA message. Ping the Hub, Repeater, Switch - all report alive.
Check ring state on both upstream and downstream hubs - report thru. which
shows ring is not wrapped, no complaints from users.

Went to Hub location and connected laptop running Hubwatch to repeater in slot
7, still getting NRA message. Terminal emulator to hub serial management port
has complete control. IP address OK, can redirect to slots 8 & 7 etc..

Reseat "In Band Agent" Repeater and problem goes away. LAN is still properly
configured and no further action is required.

Problem 2 "System generated error"

Has been seen 8 times in the last 3 months on different hubs.
From the community table we select and make current a hub, receive a system
generated error message on the DECswitch 900EF. Ping the Hub, Repeater,
Switch - all report alive. Check ring state on both upstream and downstream
hubs - report thru. which shows ring is not wrapped, and no complaints from
users.

Went to Hub location and connected laptop to repeater in slot 7. Hubwatch
paints the HUB with Slot 8 (DECswitch) and on one occasion slot 7 (the
repeater we were plugged into) as empty . Terminal emulator to hub serial
management port has complete control. IP address OK, can redirect to slot 8
and Switch answers up.

This time reseating the DECrepeater and DECswitch does not work.. slot 8 still empty. Power off and on hub clears problem but have to reconfigure LAN and DECswitch.

Problem 1 "No response from agent" (NRA)

Could be that IP Services has gone south on you. Next time this
happens, go to the hub's setup console. Pick [3] Show Current Settings.
See what the status is for In-Band Agent. It probably won't say "Active".
It may even say "Not Configured", though of course you had configured it.
This happens occasionally if the IP services module has bounced between
being "Up" and "Unknown" quickly several times. This bug will be fixed
in a Hub firmware release that should appear late this summer.

Meanwhile, you can work around this by setting up a second IP server.
The DECrepeater 900TM or the DECswitch 900EF are also capable of doing
this. It will take another IP address to do this, however.

Thanks,

Problem No. 2 "System error" has started to become more privalent.

Tried setting up another agent with additional IP address, no change.
Also looked at the in-band agent - shows active.

To get hubwatch back to showing all cards, I reset the hub using (2) "reset to
current setting" This seems to work.

I noticed that firmware dehub420.bin is available. Will this help with these
problems?

Following are the status screens for this hub. also a dump from the repeater
card.

I noticed the DEChub900 showing last download upgrade as 18 days, when it
was closer to 40 days as shown on the DECswitch screen? Is that a anomaly or
is something other than a firmware upgrade able to set that flag?

What does the 20624 resets mean for the DECswitch?
