3531.0. "Probewatch and Catalyst 5000 switches" by MEO78A::BARNHOORN (Barney to his friends) Tue May 14 1996 02:04

In the Cisco Product announcements Web Page, I found the following
    information on the Catalyst 500.

"Catalyst 3.0 EMS also provides an RMON agent running on the switch.
This agent provides the network manager with all the standard RMON
elements needed to perform detailed analysis of data-link statistics,
multi-level protocol decode of network packets and analysis of
switched network traffic flow. Cisco also offers Frontier Software's
NETscout RMON console monitor to collect and archive network
      traffic data. "

As Probewatch is "very" close to Frontier's NETscout, does this mean
that we can use probewatch to monitor Catalyst 5000 Switches?

    Has anyone tried this?

Also within the Cisco Catalyst announcement it made reference to
supplying NetScout for HP/OV, IBM NV/6000, SunNet Mgr and MS Windows
    3.1

    Thanks Mark

Mark, Frontier says that all of the clients they OEM are the same.
So PROBEwatch (or clearVISN RMON Manager) should be able to manage
    the Catalyst RMON data.

We (Digital) can also resell the NETscout software for HP UX, IBM AIX,
    and Sun. See NAC::NIPG:[HUBWATCH.RMON]RESELL.TXT

I expect to help a customer deploy this solution this week. My
understanding is that the catalyst 5000 requires a mimimun firmware
version of 1.6 to make use of the span port functionality. This will
enable Frontier's 100MB half duplex probe to be placed on the span port
and listen in on other port(s) in the switch. For this firmware
version, switching the span port to listen on other switch ports is via
    SNMP sets.

Future Cisco firmware releases will have a RMON agent in it written by
Frontier that supports " mini-RMON" for all ports on the catalyst
switch. Mini-RMON is the first four groups of RMON - so not all 9
groups are supported. To get the full 9 groups you'll need the 100mb
probe on the span port. For this type of configuration, Frontier has
used a guess of being able to monitor 20 ports via the probe on the
span port at the same time. (supposedly Frontier is completed with the
agen for this solution, but Cisco has some work to do with its SNMP
software to speed it up to work with the NETscout Plus software.
