3484.0. "900EE ... Firmware upgrade ... via Direct connect" by NCMAIL::SCHEID () Tue Apr 23 1996 13:01

    Anybody have trouble upgrading DEcswitch 900EE via hubloader ...

    Configuration:

    	Laptop - Crossover Cable connected directly to 900EE...
        Latest version of HUBloader...
        Latest version of 900EE Firmware ...
        this was not just one 900EE ... actually 3 experienced the same
        problem ...

    Results:

    	2 Timeouts ... successful on 3 attempt...

    Observation:

    	WhenI attempted the same upgrade connected to a DECrepeater 900 in
        the same 900 Backplane ... the 900EE upgraded on the first
    attempt...

3484.1Wrong number of crossovers?NETCAD::BATTERSBYDon't use time/words carelesslyTue Apr 23 1996 13:5310
    I just asked someone about the utp port on most laptops & PC's
    and the answer I got was that they usually have an internal
    crossover. So if you were using a crossover cable between the
    900EE and the laptop you had an even number of crossovers. The 900EE
    doesn't have an internal crossover on its utp ports.
    so if you are getting consistent timeouts in this config, maybe
    you just need to change the cable between the laptop utp port
    and the 900EE utp port to a straight-thru cable.

3484.2Get a new card - honestPTOJJD::DANZAKWed Apr 24 1996 00:0210
    Charlie,

    The adapters with the HI-note that they gave us typically can't sustain
    any network load. Mine has NEVER been able to upgrade anything at all!
    I've always used the ROAMABOUT to do it.

    there is a 30%+ failure rate on the Ethernet card....i'd seriously
    think about a gnu card,

3484.3Can't handle the load?... What load? :-)NETCAD::BATTERSBYDon't use time/words carelesslyWed Apr 24 1996 13:196
    Wow! They can't sustain *any* traffic load including when
    there's *nothing* else for traffic between the HI-note and a
    900EE?? Now *that's* astounding! What make are the offending
    adapters just out of curiosity?

3484.4Xircom - suxPTOJJD::DANZAKThu Apr 25 1996 12:188
    I believe that they are XIRCOM....I have *NEvER* been able to use it to
    successfully download ANYTHING - under any real type of load - it dies.
    In the office - my connections die. Haven't had time to get it
    replaced and go thru the paperwork etc. - Right now we don';t have
    time to spend with customers that we need to focus on - let alone have
    5 SEs in our region all do the same task 5 times to get updated
    adapters etc.....(aarugh),

3484.5Like the little birdie said...."cheap cheap cheap"....NETCAD::BATTERSBYDon't use time/words carelesslyThu Apr 25 1996 13:256
    They must be dirt cheap....probably the default supplier that our
    purchasing people are allowed to buy from.
    Another wonderful example of getting what one gets when some buyer
    who knows zip about quality adapters sees a "deal".
