3434.0. "HUB900 remote setting of netmasks ?" by GIDDAY::MUNN (Slothy Dogs Rule the Earth) Wed Apr 10 1996 05:30

    I have a set of DEChubs (15) spread out over an area of several
    thousand km's.

    The hubs are in an A class net which is subnetted down to
    255.255.255.0, the hubs on firmware V3.1 are stuck at 255.0.0.0. I have
    loaded Hubwatch V4.1 and downloaded the V4.1.0 firmware to the hubs via
    hubloader from a central point.

    I would now like to change the netmask. I can see the mask at:

    .mgnt.mib-2.ip.ipAddrTable.ipAddEntry.<ip address>

    using SNMP, but it is a read-only attribute so I can't set it. Is there
    any way to set the netmask without physically travelling to the HUB and
    programming it via the console port ?

3434.1Nope, gotta use the set-up port.NETCAD::GALLAGHERWed Apr 10 1996 13:454
Nope. "IP Address", "Default Gateway", and "Subnet Mask" are all configuration
parameters which must be set from the device's console.

Sorry, but you've got to visit some hubs.
3434.2Consider adding terminal servers to all orders...TOPTEN::LEONARDPaid to playThu Apr 11 1996 13:5521
    This won't help you this time, but consider it for your next
    installs...

    I include in all DEChub orders minimally a DECserver 90M for out of
    band management purposes. I connect a cable from the console/config
    port of the DEChub 900/90 to the terminal server and associate a telnet
    listener with the port. From anywhere in the IP WAN I can telnet into
    this device by specifying the base address of the terminal server and
    the telnet listener port address. Of course, this does require an IP
    WAN... I don't stop at the hub, I also connect the brouter DSU/CSU
    and any other device that has a console port...

    Were this in place at the sites which need the DEChub subnet mask
    reset, you could telnet in to the remote site and reset it without ever
    getting in your car...

    Just a thought, but sure has saved me lots of on the road travel
    time...

    Happy hubbing!

3434.3Another possibilityGIDDAY::MORETTIDeath is just a formalityFri Apr 12 1996 02:1214

    You could also set up a modem and cable for OBM of the console.

    Of course OBM IP would already have to be setup.

    If there is IP OBM setup you could send the modem/cable combo to each
    site and have the locals connect it and then dial in.

    I have requested QEC to do this as a means of cutting down site visits.

    Cheers

3434.4SNMP just won't do it!NETCAD::CURRIERFri Apr 12 1996 13:303
    the OBM port talks SNMP. The subnet cannot be set via SNMP. It must
    be set from the set up port.
