3418.0. "NCP thru a DEF1H with twisted-pair (BN24F-XX)" by SALEM::HARRIS_M () Wed Apr 03 1996 01:20

    hi,,
    quick question.. I've got a DEF1H with a 900EF connected to its back.
    I've got a PCM engine that is connected via twisted pair and a ec-
    server 700 that is also connected via twisted pair. I'm using a
    BN24F-XX cable as the twisted pair cable. I've loaded the Decserver
    software on the PCM engine and configured the DECserver in NCP. When
    I try to ncp loop or connect to the decserver I get a device timeout
    error. Basically stating that I can't connect to the decserver. Am I
    using the right twisted pair cable? If I'm not connecting to an
    external network will this hose me? I've kinda verified this by
    connecting both the PCM and the DECServer via a BN25G-XX cable to a
    decrepeater90 and were able to downline load the decserver and do a NCP
    CONN NODE XXXX.

    		Any info would be greatly appreciated.

3418.1You probably have an even number of crossovers...NETCAD::BATTERSBYDon't use time/words carelesslyWed Apr 03 1996 13:0510
    I'm not familiar with the UTP Ethernet port of the DECserver 700
    as to whether it has an internal crossover on its UTP port.
    I suspect, based on what you describe that when using the BN24F
    cable you have an even number of crossovers, so one negates the
    other. The DECswitch 900EF which I am familiar, does not have internal
    crossovers on its Ethernet UTP ports. So you are probably correct with
    your second choice of the BN25G straight through cable for your
    connection between the 900EF and the UTP Ethrnet interface.

3418.2BN25G..BN24F?SALEM::HARRIS_MWed Apr 03 1996 13:589
    Thanks,
    I've tried the BN25G on the 2 twisted pair ports, each running to the
    decserver and the other to the alpha station. This doesn't work, as the
    network cards don't become active. If I use the bn24f atleast I'm able
    to bring the decserver and the alphastation up and PCM comes up fine.
    I can loop thru the 900ef via utp --FDDI- to all other nodes in the
    cluster.

3418.3Please describe what you see 900EF port state doingNETCAD::BATTERSBYDon't use time/words carelesslyWed Apr 03 1996 14:108
    Can you describe what the port state led does on the 900EF UTP
    port that is connected to the DECserver 700 UTp port for each
    type of cable for me? Then I should be able to tell you which
    one is creating the link correctly. Given that one of the 2 cable
    types is probably making the link, the problem is likely somewhere
    else.

3418.4TWISTED....PTOJJD::DANZAKFri Apr 05 1996 14:2311
    Digital REPEATERS (which connect to end user devices) provide a TWIST
    in the RX/TX pair (hence the "X") on their pannels. The DECswitch
    (designed to connect LAN-to-LAN) provides no RX/TX twist....so you need
    a TWIST in the cable not a straight thru one.

    So, get a twisted cable (damnifiknow the part number) and it will work.
    (Or put a TP adapter on the AUI and a non-twist will work there)
