3408.0. "HUBwatch and Sun ?????" by CHEFS::HARVEY (Baldly going into the unknown...) Wed Mar 27 1996 16:04

I have a customer who has just purchased HUBwatch for SunOS to manage his
GIGAswitches. He uses a SunOS/Solaris V1 Sun Netmanager platform with
various tools to monitor/manage 3COM hubs etc.

It turns out that half the functions required are not available in the
HUBwatch product - Spanning Tree Disable, TRAPS etc. - and the MIBS are
required to enable these controls. In trying to compile the ELAN and
GIGAswitch MIBS into the Sun it accepted the ELAN one but errors on the G/S
   one.

We've loaned HUBwatch/Windows to see if it's any more functional and also
given him a ManageWORKS demo CD with the MIBS to see if it will compile
   them.

With a bit of hacking the customer has now managed to set the G/s' up but
has had to resort to editing the G/S MIB to do so. I am in the process of
reporting this back through the CSC....

Q? Are these functions EVER likely to appear in HUBwatch ? V5 doesn't appear
   to cover them..

Q? Is V6 of HUBwatch likely to be the new ClearVISN "chassis mangler"
   product ?

Q? Where does ManageWORKS (or is that ServerWORKS ???) feature in the
   HUBwatch/ClearVISN storyline ?

Q? Will Sun management platforms be a part of our supported base ? Notably
   SunOS/Solaris V2.4 ???

If the Sun Netmanager is NOT going to be around then I need to know now so
that we can propose an alternative and minimise "damage" at this customer
site etc. sooner rather than later.

I see the strategic thrust of ClearVISN tools being in the direction of NT
and Windows PC's... What is happening in the UNIX arena ?

   Answers on a postcard.......

   Thanks

   Rog

Rog, *every* V4.1 of HUBwatch on *every* platform supprts the same stuff.

Traps are not a part of HUBwatch.

See other notes from the past week or so about GIGAswitch managment.

For information about futures, you need to (everybody, all together
now) contact our product manager, Jack NAC::Forrest.

Tom,

Although some of .0's questions are for Jack Forrest, the one about
management is pertinent today.

~~ Q? Where does ManageWORKS (or is that ServerWORKS ???) feature in the
~~ HUBwatch/ClearVISN storyline ?

There's a lot of confusion in the field and in my head concerning, for
example, the overlap between ManageWORKS and Polycenter NetView. HUBwatch
is an entity manager, but ClearVISN (still no I/O ;-)) seems to be more
ambitious - so the picture gets even more complicated.

A simple view would be that:

	o ManageWORKS is for PCs
          - but what about all the network discovery & MIB browser stuff?

o ClearVISN is for managing NPBU things
	  - but what about the StonyBrook bit that brings 3Com etc. into the
            picture?

o Polycenter NetView is the solution when it comes to managing a
          complex network
	  - but can't you do that with ManageWORKS and ClearVISN?

As you can see, some clarification from people "in the know" is needed...

Regards,

-John

Jack is *still* the right person. At the recent field training
done in Bedford, Mass, these points were all covered. Perhaps
    you could convince Jack to post his answers here? ;-{)}

3408.5overlapping net management apps - a fact of lifeNAC::FORRESTFri Mar 29 1996 18:1231
There is obviously some overlap in functionality among the various
products mentioned here. Even before we threw in clearVISN, there was
overlap between POLYCENTER NetView and ManageWORKS. ServerWORKS totally
overlapped ManageWORKS. Overlap is a fact of life when you are focusing
on different markets. Of course if the overlap is greater than 50%, it
doesn't make sense to have separate products - which is why ManageWORKS
    and ServerWORKS are combining forces.

As far as the clearVISN overlap with ManageWORKS and NetView, our focus
is the network infrastructure - primarily composed of Digital hardware.
We don't expect anyone to buy clearVISN, unless they have Digital
Network hardware to manage. Many of the same kinds of tools apply here
as apply for NetView and ManageWORKS - i.e. mapping, alarming, MIB
    browsing, etc.

In the market for network infrastructure hardware, we can't ask every
customer to buy ManageWORKS or NetView - it's just seen as too
proprietary compared to the competing hardware vendors who are
supporting several of the leading management stations. We also have a
significant number of customers who aren't ready to invest in a high
end NMS, but still who would like mapping, alarming, etc.

We are talking with both ServerWORKS and NetView people to see how we
might be able to bundle things together in an integrated fashion. Our
goal is that when you install clearVISN, and an NMS platform is
present, then we augment the topology and alarming information rather
than replace it or conflict with it. That will take a lot of work on
our part because each NMS is different.

Also note that we are planning anything more than a launch on the Unix
    NMS's that we support.

This recent Press Release doesn't help us in the Field re: the earlier
entries in this string... Neither does it if the intention is to "divest" in
some of the ports in the near future in favour of ClearVISN on NT !

                   Digital Expands UNIX Support for
                     HUBwatch Management Software

MAYNARD, Mass., March 11, 1996 -- Digital Equipment Corporation
today announced availability of HUBwatch network management software
for HP-UX, Sun-OS and IBM AIX UNIX platforms, making it easier for
HP OpenView, SunNet Manager and NetView AIX users to integrate
Digital's networking products into their existing network management
 structure.

HUBwatch provides a powerful, low-cost, graphical Simple
Network Management Protocol (SNMP) interface that makes it easy to
configure and manage a broad range of Digital's networking hardware,
from the complete DEChub family to the industry-leading
GIGAswitch/FDDI product. HUBwatch software is also available for
Digital UNIX, OpenVMS (VAX), and Microsoft Windows platforms.

"HUBwatch is very popular because of its intuitive
point-and-click graphical interface, which is common across
Digital's many network products," said Jack Forrest, product manager
for HUBwatch. "Until today, customers with HP, Sun or IBM UNIX
management environments ran HUBwatch as a standalone application.
Now they can integrate HUBwatch into their management environment,
enabling them to manage more of their network from a single
 platform."

 About HUBwatch

HUBwatch is best value in full-range management applications
on the market today. Designed to meet the critical needs of a
changing network, HUBwatch includes simple point-and-click commands,
descriptive icons and context-sensitive help to ensure easy
management by even a non-technical person.

For maximum flexibility, HUBwatch can be installed as an add-on
application to existing management systems or as a standalone
 application. It supports:

      o DEChub modules
      o Digital MultiStack System
      o GIGAswitch/FDDI
o Software configurable virtual local area networks (VLANs),
in conjunction with the DEChub 900 MultiSwitch and
        PORTswitch modules.

 Pricing and Availability

HUBwatch is available now for HP-UX and Sun SPARCstation
platforms. HUBwatch will be available on the IBM AIX platform in 60
