3361.0. "900EF Resets when polled from PNV" by CGOOA::KUHNEN () Wed Mar 13 1996 14:32

    I started polling a 900EF switch with PNV to gather statistical
    information. When I started to do so the switch started reseting
    approximately 5 times a day.

    I observed the same thing when I tried to poll a second switch.

    I am polling for MIB-2 and HUB specific MIB information to produce
    statistics.

    The hardware revisions are:

    HW = v 1/2
    RO = v 0.4
    SW = v 1.5.0

    In the error log I get entries like:

    FRU MASK = 0
    TEST ID = DEAD
    SR = 2000 PC=03072C78 ERROR CODE = 00003000 PROCSCR = 776D
    LINE = 1049

    This information is consistent for all but one entry on both switches.

    Is there a known problem with polling from NETVIEW or something special
    that has to be configured to poll these devices?

    Thanks

    Pardon my ignorance, but what does "PNV" stand for?

    This is a known problem and is caused by the large size of the Netview
    GetRequest. The size of the GetRequest is such that the GetResponse would
    be >1500 bytes. The correct behavior (RFC1157) is for the EF to reply
    with an error status of tooBig and an error index of 0.

    A work around is to limit the number of MIB objects in a Netview
    GetRequest. Netview does provide a way to limit the number of mib
    objects in a single GetRequest. The procedure to do this is -

        - Stop snmpCollect
        - Modify usr/OV/conf/ovsuf so that the line that begins with
          "0:snmpCollect:" includes the -m qaulifier which specifies the
          maximum number of mib objects in each request

                0:snmpCollect:/usr/OV/bin/snmpCollect:OVs_YES_START:nvsecd,trapd,
                ovwdb,ovtopmd:-m16:OVs_WELL_BEHAVED:120:
                        (this example specifies a max of 16 objects)

        - Start snmpCollect

Bob, PNV = POLYCENTER NetView.

    Thanks Tom. I had the NetView part but I couldn't see the
    POLYCENTER for the trees.

    Actually "Polycenter" marketing came up with an octopus as a marketing
    campaign. I understood from talking to the consultant who was at one
    company who was using MCC (one of our attempts at network management)
    that about two years ago when we were in consolidate and cancel mode
    with products - every time that we cancelled a product the company had
    another arm cut off of their large octopus poster.

    I think that eventually he was sort of stubby....
