3192.0. "DEFMR: low f/o output" by ISTWI1::AKIN () Mon Jan 22 1996 13:17

This is not directly related with management but I don't know any other
    conference that could answer.

One of our network resellers saw that some ports of a DECrepeater 90FL
was not functioning. And he decided to measure the output level of the
f/o ports. The transmit level came out to be -19 dB in the healthy
ports and -34 dB in the malfunctioning ports.

The specific unit in question was not installed for about one year
since it was purchased. I do not know in what kind of environment it
was stocked (ie., dust, dirt...) but I think this may be due to a
mechanical problem. Any comments on this? As the warranty preiod has
expired the reseller wants to repair this unit with the minimum cost.

3192.1Were dust boots in place when reseller opened box?NETCAD::BATTERSBYMon Jan 22 1996 14:375
Do you recall asking the reseller if there were dust boots on the
fiber ports when they first ascertained that some of the fiber
    ports were not functioning?

Yes. This is the most probable thing, and was checked from outside of
the box. However I do not know the inside of the box. That is, how the
light source is coupled physically to the port and if there is a chance
of dust covering the light source. Also a physical shock to the port
might have loosen this coupling. I seems that there isn't much to do
    except a good eye inspection.
