3168.0. "DS900EF Topology question " by RDGENG::GREID (All that is, was and will be...) Wed Jan 17 1996 08:02

I would appreciate someone clarifying the following topology
    for me :-

                    DC900MX DC900MX
    		+-------------+ +--------+ +-------------+
    		| A M M M M B | | Giga | | A M M M M B |
                +-------------+ | Switch | +-------------+
                  | | +--------+ | |
                  | | |FGL2| | |
    		  | +-------+ +-------+ |
     		  +----------------------------------------+

Now I want to connect in two separate DECHub 900s that each have a
DS900EF in slot 8. Each Hub will have DR900TMs installed providing
UTP office wiring connections and probably one DS900TM.

    Question 1:

So can I only connect the DS900EF in each hub using one MIC to MIC fibre
cable to one M port on one of the DC900MXs, or can I dual home each of
    the DS900EFs to the DC900MX pair ?.

    Question 2:

Depending on the restrictions from Question 1, what is the correct
setting in Hubwatch LAN Interconnnect to configure the the DS900EFs
to?, bearing in mind that the Bridge will only be providing FDDI into
the backplane of the Hub to then provide connectivity to the DR900TMs.
None of the DS900EFs ethernet ports will get used.

    Any suggestions welcome,

    Giles.

If the DECswitch is the only FDDI-capable modules in the
hubs you're talking about connecting, you cannot connect FDDI
to the backplane - there's no other module to connect to. In this
case you leave the DECswitch ports at their default - A and B out the
front.

Since you have A and B ports out the front, you can dual home them
to M ports of the two different concentrators.

The ethernet ports on the DECswitches will be in use. Perhaps you
meant the front-panel ethernet wouldn't be used? In any event, use
Hubwatch to point the Ethernet ports to the backplane so that you
can use them to connect to the repeaters in backplane lans.

    Mike,
Thanks for the clarification, I realise now that I need to
under the Ring configuration set the A+B Ports to the front panel, and
as you summised set the ethernets to the backplane (at least one
anyway), so the the switch (EF) can provide connectivity between the
    FDDI and the ethernet.

Bear in mind that port 3 is the only port of the 900EF that you'll be
able to connect to the ThinWire of the hub900's backplane.
