3154.0. "DECbridge 900EF support Translational Bridging?" by HTSC19::KENNETH () Fri Jan 12 1996 08:00

Hi,

Is there anybody know whether DECbridge 900EF support "tranlational bridging"
or not?

If yes, how to disable it or enable it?

Thanks for your help in advance.

    All of Digital's FDDI to Ethernet devices that support bridging use
    full translational bridging. This was one of Digital's sales
    advantages about four or five years ago, when we were the only ones who
    could do it. Back then other vendors (such as CISCO) used a method of
    converting Ethernet packets to a CISCO-proprietary format on the FDDI
    which was called "encapsulation", and could only be de-capsulated by
    another CISCO.

    Now, most vendors support full translation. If a vendor doesn't, don't
    use that bridge.

3154.2Data packets form 4500 to 1500?VNAED2::SEIDLERThu Jan 25 1996 04:377
Hello,

how does the Bridge(DECbridge 900MX) handle 4500 to 1500 sized packets?
Is this possible and when how it's done.

Many thanks in advance

3154.3IP Fragmentation.NETCAD::GALLAGHERFri Jan 26 1996 13:0514
Christian,

The DECswitch900EF and PEswitch900Tx support IP fragmentation as described
in RFC 791. The crux is the the switch break the 4495 (max FDDI frame size)
into 3 Ethernet (max 1518) frames.

IP fragmentation is enabled by default and can be disabled via management.

This should be documented with HUBwatch (other documentation says it is).
It may be documented in the switch manuals (I didn't check). It will
definitely be documented in the upcoming "DEChub Network Modules 900-Series
Switch Reference" manual.

    Shawn's right. Both the EF & TX support fragmentation of large
    FDDI IP packets to legal size Ethernet packets per RFD-791
    and (Internet protocol), and RFC-1191 (Path MTU Discovery).
    It is mentioned in both installation manuals for both products,
    and this is also mentioned on the NPB web page under Switches.
