3112.0. "DECconcentrator 900MX not recognised in DH900" by MARS03::THOMAS () Tue Jan 02 1996 08:40

	I installed 1 new DECconcentrator 900MX + 1 DECswitch 900EF in 1 new
DEChub 900MS (DH2) and 2 new DECconcentrator 900MX + 1 DECswitch 900EF in
another new DEChub 900MS (DH3). DH1 is an existing DH 900MS with a DECswitch
900EF.

The firmwares for all the equipments in DH2 and DH3 are:
	- 3.0.1 for the DC,
	- 1.5.0 for the DS,
	- 4.0.4 for the DH.
The firmware of DS of DH1 is older.

I succeeded to form a local optical FDDI ring between all these
equipments.

	DH1 DH2 DH3
	DS ------------ DS-DC --------- DS DC DC
	!--------------------------------------!

	--- external optical fiber ring

Then i had to remove one of the 2 DC of the DH3. When i reinserted it,
it was not recognised any longer by the DH900 (front panel and HUBwatch). All
the 3 LED of the DC are OFF. All these LEDS have only a brief (1/2 sec) weak
flash when the module is inserted. If it is inserted in the DH2, the pb is
the same.

Then i decided, to remove the second DC of the DH3. When i reinserted in
the DH3, it was not recognised any longer. If i put this DC in DH2, the pb stays
the same.

What is the reason of this problem ?

	Thank you for any comment/answer.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 96 for each of you.

Hi Bernard -

What does the LCD say on each of the hubs? In particular,
look at the power available messages, see if there is an
insufficient power message, and check the slots available
message. Look also for pin damage on the concentrators,
and peer into the hubs' backplace slots to see if they look
all right.

Hi,
I have a customer today with the same problem! I was about to
write it of as hardware when I read this note.
My customer claims that the Concentrator will be recognised if
he leaves it out of the hub for 5 minutes and then re inserts.
The problem has only existed since he upgraded the firmware.

Please give us some more information:
    1) how many power supplies in each hub
    2) what kind of power supply is each (140W vs 163W)
    3) What is in the error logs of the hubs
    4) How many Watts of power are available (as displayed on the LCD)
before and after inserting the problem concentrators.
    5) Are there any other modules in the hubs (such as 90 modules etc)
If so tell us what they are.

    6) Be more specific with the configuration: What slots are each module
type located in, which slot is removed first etc.

And please don't "shout" at us in all capital letters,
(even if we are ancient enough to have used ASR33's as
terminals). It gives us a headache, and reminds us we
have other work to do.

    	There are 3 140W P.S. in DH1, DH2, DH3.

There is no error in error logs of DH1, DH2 and DH3.

    	In DH2 and DH3, there are 295 W, 59A in 5V and 10A in 15V, with 1
DS + 1 DC in each DH.

    	In DH2 and DH3, there are 337,5W, 66A in 5V and 10,5A in 15V, with
only the DS in DH2 and DH3.

There is no 90 modules in DH2 and DH3.

DS (IP server) is in slot 8 in each DH. I tried to put DC in slot
    7,6,5,4.

In fact, the pb was in the harware of the DC.

As european logistic could only give me new DC at the beginning of
march (!!), a field service engineer came on customer site. He opened the 2
DC modules; he removed and reinserted inside boards and did new ground
solders. Now, the 2 DC modules work fine.

    	Regards,
