3063.0. "Connect 2 Ethernet LAN distant 3 kilometers?" by COWBOY::MIRGHANE () Tue Dec 12 1995 17:55

    We have to connect 2 *2 Ethernet networks distant 3 kilometers.
    The solution we have proposed is a multimode fiber connection based
    on 4 LANbridge 200. 2 LANbridge connect 2 Ethernet LAN.
    However the LANbridge 200 is now in maintenance only and we cannot sell
    it anymore.

    We then have thought of using a DECswitch900EF instead of the LANbridge
    200 connecting the 2 Ethernet with FDDI.
    Our problem is that this solution is too expensive mainly if we use SMF
    cables (the SMF ModPMD is really too expensive and we need 8 of them to
    connect the 4 DECswitch900EF 2 by 2)

    Our customer is really angry and looking at competitive solution
    AND WE NEED HELP.

    1/Is there another solution TO CONNECT 2 Ethernets distant 3 Kilometers?
    If yes how?

    2/If not and Since we only transport ETHERNET (10 Mbps) between the 2
    DECswitch900EF can we use Multimode fiber FDDI to cover the 3 kilometers??

    Thanks very much for an urgent help.

    Regards.
    Soumetty.

3063.1Use a High Power Ethernet TransceiverMSDOA::REEDJohn Reed @CBO = Network ServicesWed Dec 13 1995 14:518
    I would connect an optical Transceiver to each AUI port of a DECswitch
    900EF on each side of the link. (Dont use FDDI, since it won't like
    the distance) The optical transceivers should come from a vendor who
    supports long haul fiber links, using hig power optics. (Chipcom has
    such transcevier). These will push your ethernet data over a 3Km fiber
    between two bridges.

3063.2Use a 900EE with -.1 if cost, but FDDI is still nicePTOJJD::DANZAKSun Dec 17 1995 23:0911
    ANd, if the cost is a real issue - use a 900EE which lowers the cost by
    4k....2K at each end...

    Note that the benefit is that the customer can do MORE SWITCHING with a
    6 port switch.

    However, i'd go for FDDI for a fuller bandwidth at each end...i.e. they
    can do high powered FDDI servers on the DECswitch 900EF etc....and
    locally do lots more switching...

3063.3Optical Ethernet solution OK thanks and regards.COWBOY::MIRGHANETue Feb 13 1996 10:095
    Thanks very much for this help. The customer has chosen the optical
    Ethernet solution.
