3053.0. "Help required in using packetprobe" by QDOV01::MSINGHAL () Mon Dec 11 1995 03:34

Hello ,

I have recently installed packetprobe but I have some queries regarding using
the same efficiently .

1. ) We are able to monitor traffic for different hosts and in detail for a
particular host . But how can we monitor traffic on particular segment ?
Basically client is interested in monitoring traffic on particular segment
So that if load is high they can shift some node and hosts on different
     segment.

2. ) Traffic monitor gives hostname as "DEC -2b-3c-34"(i.e DEC and last three
digit of MAC address) . Can somehow we have the actual hostname for the
     differnet hosts.

3. ) When we connected packetprobe on Dechub flax channel it does not work and
it use to give error in communicating with the agent . But it works fine
when packetprobe is used outside the Dechub900. Is connecting packetprobe
     on DECHUB900 not supported ?

4. ) How can we save different traffic information in a file ?

5. ) I tried capturing data using Data capture for a IP traffic between two
hosts . I start and stop the data capture but it does save info on the
file name I have given. Am I doing something wrong ?

Thanks in advance ,

Manish Singhal.

Just like all 90-series modules, the Packetprobe can only connect to the
ThinWire segment in the DEChub 900 backplane, not to any of the flex channels.

People have come up with some creative ways of monitoring the flex channels
with the packetprobe. One way is to reserve the ThinWire to the packetprobe,
and use a 900 repeater to repeat between the desired flex channel LAN and the
ThinWire. Voila! Instant switchable RMON probe.

There is development now for putting RMON into some existing 900-series modules,
including the switches and repeaters. This will be released sometime soon.
For current schedules, check nac::nipg:[manage]status.txt. The product manager
for this is Jack Forrest.
