2980.0. "Power glitch/power off no power on" by PTOJJD::DANZAK () Tue Nov 14 1995 21:17

We have a HUB that has a:

    1.) Roamabout
    2.) 900FP Repeater
    3.) 900TM Network Access Server
    4.) 900EE DECswitch
    5.) 900TX DECswitch
    6.) 900EF DECswitch
    7.) 900MX DECconcentrator (6 MMF PMDs)
    8.) 900GM DECrepeater

The hub has 4 of the older power supplies (H7890) and was upgraded to
the new firmware etc. (CONsolitated 4.1.1)

When I take out the 900TX and pop it back in, all modules from the
900TX down to the module in slot 2 power off. The only way to get 'em
to power on is to take out modules in slots 2,3,4 and 5 - put in the
module in slot 5 (the TX) then go back down the line and put in slotes
    4,3,2.

    Is that a bug? Known/unknown?

    Thanks,
    j

Jon, you should know better than to create problems. lottsa :-)'s

Remember when you were a kid and you went to your mother complaining
about how your head hurt when you banged it against the wall, and
she told you, "don't do that!", well....Don't do that! :-)
All kidding aside, I don't know of any reason related to the 900TX
itself that would cause this problem. Perhaps the MAM folks can say
whether this is something that could happen (infrequently depending
    on certain configs).

John,
No this is not a known bug in the MAM. I tried to reproduce this problem with
no success. It appears that the 900TX was asking for some unknown amount of
power. This caused the Power Manager to power down all of the 900-style
modules to the left of the 900TX. It is possible that a pin on the bottom
row of the 160-pin connector was either seated improperly, or bent (to some
degree). Removing and inserting the module may have caused the pins to
properly connect.

You may want to check the bottom row of pins on the 900TX, and make sure the
hub has stiffeners. If this happens again in the future, you should check
your LCD power display, and the chasPowerSinkWattage for the module in
question. A future version of the MAM will tell the user, via the LCD, that
a module is bad and should be removed.

Hope this helps,
Chip Boyle
