2931.0. "DEFLM-->DEREP will it work?" by PTOJJD::DANZAK () Tue Oct 31 1995 10:39

    Can i connect a DEFLM-M to an aui port of the DECswitch 900EF and talk
    to the fiber from an old DEREP? (i.e. the big-as-a-pizza box fiber
    repeater etc..) What signalling does it do versus the DEFLM?

    Thanks!

2931.1Nope, they "won't see the light"NETCAD::BATTERSBYTue Oct 31 1995 12:2711
    The DEREP used a DEC-proprietary signaling which was neither
    FOIRL nor 10base-FL compatible. The DEFLM fiber is of course 10base-FL.
    There is a note in the Ethernet_V2 notes conference (UPSAR::ETHERNET_V2)
    865.3 which explains all the differences between the old product
    compatabilities, and lack of.
    So, basically, I would suggest you replace the old big-as-a-pizza DEREP
    box with its likely generous veneer of dust, with something more
    state-of-the-art that can "talk"' to the DEFLM & other 10base-FL
    products.

    DEFAR comes to mind...

2931.3DEREP used a truely proprietary signaling fibre medium...NETCAD::BATTERSBYTue Oct 31 1995 20:045
    DEFAR is a 10base-FL compatible device which allows for backwards
    compatibility with FOIRL compliant devices. The DEREP wasn't ...er
    "forwards" compatible/compliant with FOIRL.
