2768.0. "DB900 looses thinwire connection" by PTOJJD::DANZAK () Mon Sep 18 1995 01:29

    I have a DECbridge 900MX rev C01 in a DECHUB 900 rev A04.  I did the
    following:

    1.) Flipped the first 5 bridge ports to the backplane
    2.) Created 2 Ethernet LANS and 1 FDDI
    3.) Conenected all the Ethernet LANS together
    4.) Moved a terminal server to a flex Ethernet LAN

    Port 3 on the switch, the one that goes to the default thinwire LOOSES
    connectivity and goes dark! I tried the bridge is slot 5 and 6 with
    the same problem.

    Any idea what's up? Is this a known problem? This is my demo hub but
    it will be used for trainiing in a few weeks so I'm a bit worried about
    it....

    Thanks,
    j

What are your software revs for the DEChub 900 MAM and the
DECbridge 900MX?

Did you power cycle or reset the hub or the bridge at any
point during the LAN Interconnect setup?

2768.2What other modules are in this HUB?NETCAD::BATTERSBYMon Sep 18 1995 14:195
    It might also be useful to know if there are any other modules
    in this HUB besides the mentioned DECswitch900EF and un-mentioned
    DECserver type.

2768.3Possibly a configuration problemNETCAD::CARRAFIELLOMon Sep 18 1995 17:4616
    The Thinwire connection on a DECbridge 900MX is not a default
    connection. At power up all connections default to the front panel
    ports. You have to explicitly configure Port 3 to the backplane
    Thinwire if you want that connection.

    The explanation in .0 sounds like the first 5 ports were configured to
    backplane LANs which I interpret to mean matrix channels. If this is
    true then Port 3 would have been connected to a matrix channel and not
    the backplane Thinwire. The other possibility is that the ports were
    only pointed at the backplane via the Hubwatch ligo but not actually
    connected to a backplane channel on the configuration screen. Also if
    all of the Ethernet LANs were connected together as stated in item 3
    then most of the ports would be in the backup state and they wouldn't
    pass traffic.

2768.4In reply...been there seen it done it many timesPTOJJD::DANZAKMon Sep 18 1995 18:0626
    well...
    to reply...

    all hub modules were at 4.1 of firmware rev/kit

    the hub (from what I recall...) slots are:

    Roamabout
    token ring 8 port repeater
    token thing 2 port repeater
    DECconcentrator 500
    DECswitch 900MX
    DECserver 900TM
    DECrepeater 90GM

    I did reset the module, remove it from the hub, turned the LIGO types
    around to the backplane...watched 'em do spanning tree (indicating that
    they were turned around) and when I connected it to the
    thinwire....(port 3) it lived for a bit then died....

    Any thoughts?

    REgards,

    I wonder if the port 3 summary window shows any "interesting" errors?
    From your description, it sounds like a possible hardware problem...
    Bob, under what circumstances would the port LED go dark?

2768.6Did show broken status, didn't get snmp junque..PTOJJD::DANZAKMon Sep 18 1995 20:017
    I did a check of status, it showed the port as red (broken) but I
    didn't check the SNMP doodoo....I can do that late 2night before I
    fly...

    regards,

2768.7My guess is, there must have been a loop createdNETCAD::BATTERSBYTue Sep 19 1995 20:0512
    <----- RE: .5

    Mike D. Like Mike Carrafiello said, somehow there must have been a
    loop created, and port 3 detected the loop and went into backup.
    Also like Mike C. said, port 3 doesn't default to the thinwire on
    power-up like the repeaters do. So perhaps connecting the first 5 ports
    to backplane channels, and then following this up by attempting to connect
    port 3 to the thinwire is what created the loop. I'm not sure of the
    exact order that Jon D. is alluding to in his base note when describing
    what he did.

    Bob
2768.8Not a loop...PTOJJD::DANZAKWed Sep 20 1995 11:0025
    NO....wrong....NOT right....

    When a loop is created the LED flashes...it doesn't go dead.

    AND....i loose connectivity to the terminal server connected on the
    LAN.

    That is......

    I have a 900GM that connects me in slot 8 to the backbone in the
    building and management station....

    When I take the TERMINAL SERVER in slot 7 off of the thinwire and put
    it onto a FLEXlan and then use the decswitch to switch between the
    flexlan and thinwire.....the LED on 3 goes DEAD (not blinking doing
    spanning tree) and my server looses connectivity to backbone
    services....
    (one service being reverse-LAT tot he hub management port.....

    so.....i KNOW that it's not a loop becuase i loose connectivity to the
    THINwire from other flexlans....

    duuh...sigh....

    Okay let's start from ground zero -

    	- check for bent pins on modules and power supplies (don't see how
    	  this could be related but let's not overlook)

    	- reset MAM and all modules to factory defaults

    	- A04 on the backplane should have the stiffeners but what slot is
    	  the DECbridge in? Just for kicks try moving it to slot 1,2,3 or 4

    	- confirm that you're running MAM 4.0.4 and DECswitch 1.5.0

    	- show us the error log for the MAM and all modules

    	- try swapping out the DECbridge

    Bill
2768.10Same results - stiff hub, update firmware any slot etc...PTOJJD::DANZAKThu Sep 21 1995 16:15329
    Did all of the above EXCEPT module swap....no time but will try l8ter
    2night......same results....attached is error log:

    note that in the MAM error log the power supply junk was me zipping it
    on/off during a demo....the repeater (on thinwire) showed no errors...
    no pins, reset EVERY module and hub and all were at current firmare
    (i.e. 4.0.4 hub  1.5 switch etc...)

2768.11DB900 looses thinwire connection puzzle resolved...NETCAD::BATTERSBYFri Oct 13 1995 13:5011
    I have resolved this problem. Jon was kind enough to bring this
    module with him on his recent visit to LKG.
    I tested this module out and found that it failed a test only
    run in manufacturing, Test B05 BTW External Loopback Test.
    My investigation further found the -9V DC-DC converter to be defective
    along with the DP8392 Thinwire chip. This is an external loopback
    test that cannot be run in a HUB as it would "disturb" other modules
    which may have already established a connection to the HUB backplane
    thinwire channel.

2768.12ESD possibly could have caused this failure....NETCAD::BATTERSBYFri Oct 13 1995 13:547
    One other comment, I neglected to mention is that a possible
    failure scenario is that perhaps there was some ESD (electrical
    static discharge), present on the HUB thinwir channel this module
    was plugged into when it first failed, and the ESD zapped the DP8392
    and then took out the DC-DC converter.
