2736.0. "What protocol types to pass for SNMP please ?" by CHEFS::HANCOCK_M (Use what you (used to) sell) Mon Sep 11 1995 14:04

	Hi,
		I wish to manage remote entities with HUBwatch using SNMP,
		and these entities are the far side of a Brouter-brouter link
		where the brouters are in bridging mode.

	The brouters are set up to filter everything except the usual stuff
	(LAT,DECnet etc).I would like to know what protocol type to let through
	to allow SNMP management.If we pass everything,it works,but this is not
	ideal,so which protocol types do we need to allow please ??

	I checked the LAN address and protocol registry document,but not very
	helpful,only Digital-assigned addresses,presumably SNMP is in the
	public domain ?

				Cheers Mick

2736.1Protocol Type IP (0x0800).WARFUT::NAEEMMon Sep 11 1995 15:458

    	SNMP uses IP as network protocol.So ,let 0800 (protocol type)
    	through.Also ,SNMP uses UDP as Transport .If filtering on
    	brouter allows ,then allow UDP only.

	From the ethernet conference; you would also need to bridge ARP
    (08-06) if the station/agent are in the same subnet, and you may want
    to be cautious there...

    	And, to add to Brad's reply, be cautious about enabling bridging of
    ARP (08-06). If the customer is filtering everything except DECnet/LAT
    etc, then it may be because they want to block excessive broadcast
    traffic. Whenever possible, IP should be routed, not bridged. This may
    or may not be practical for your customer, depending upon their IP
    topology. If "real" routing of IP is a problem, you can either place
    the snmp agent in a private, non-advertised subnet, or utilize proxy
    arp on the DECbrouter to create a "hidden" subnet. If you have
    questions about setting up DECbrouters as above, post them in
    KALI::DEWBR.

    	And if excessive B'cast traffic isn't a problem, disregard all of
    the above & just bridge the beast..... :^)
