2644.0. "PORTswitch 900TP/Virtual lan." by VAXRIO::HENRIQUE () Tue Aug 15 1995 20:07

    Hi,

I have heard about virtual lan implementation on PORTswitch 900TP.
Could someone please explain this term virtual lan on portswitch
and how many possibles "virtual lan" could be implemented on it ?

    Thanks for any information.

Jeannie,

It means that :

I can for example, group all 32 port in LAN1, all 32 ports in LAN2......
and so on . All 32 ports in all LAN's ?

Another possibility:

1- Port 1 in LAN1,LAN2.....LAN6.
    Port 2 in LAN1,LAN2.....LAN6.
    Port 3 in LAN1,LAN2.....LAN6.
               "
               "
               "
    Port 32 in LAN1,LAN2.....LAN6.

Am I correct ?

Henrique

2644.3No, no, noSNOFS1::KHOOJEANNIEThu Aug 17 1995 05:1022
    Henrique,

    No, that is not correct.

In the PORTswitch, there can be up to 6 LANs, but each port is
assigned to only 1 of these 6 LANs.

Think of it this way (to paraphrase Ed Buzzell):

    - each port has a "repeater engine"

    - each port/repeater engine must be assigned to 1 of the 6
"LAN engines" in the PORTswitch module

    - ports assigned to the same LAN engine become one logical repeater

    - LAN engines can be assigned to flexible channels in the backplane.

    - the Thinwire bus also has a repeater engine, and is assigned to 1 of
      the 6 LAN engines.

    Jeannie

    Ok Jeannie, I understood.

    Thank you.

I don't understand clearly about virtual LANs.

>> When the PORTswitch 900TP is in a DEChub 900, you can choose whether or
>> not to assign each of these "virtual" LANs to a backplane channel.

    1. The PORTswitch 900TP can support only in a DEChub900.
    2. The PORTswitch 900TP can't support with DEChubONE.

Is this correct?

On the contrary, the Portswitch 900TP can be used in the
DEChub ONE as part of a standalone stackable solution, as well
as be configured in a DEChub 900 Multiswitch.

	Thanks.

When the PORTswitch is in the DEChub ONE,
	it supports port-grouping, isn't it?

The Portswitch 900TP has six internal LANs. The front-panel ports and
the AUI port can be randomly assigned to any of the internal LANs, no
restrictions. Ports assigned to the same internal LAN operate with
each other as a single independent repeater. Ports assigned to
different internal LANs have no network connection whatsoever.

The assignment of ports to internal LANs occurs whether the module is
in a hub or a docking station. The only difference is the paths the
internal LANs have to get out of the box. In the hub, the internal
LANs can be connected to backplane ethernet flex channels. In the
docking station, the only way out of the box is through the front panel
    ports and the AUI port.
