2371.0. "Spanning-Tree -problems?" by EEMELI::RUOTILA () Mon Jun 12 1995 11:40

    Hi,

    We have a customer which is trying to set up primary/backup links
    between two segments using Lan Bridge 200 and DECswitch 900EE.

    We are not 100% sure if IEEE802.1 Spanningtree is used in every other
    bridge/Switch in the customers network, but we are going to check it.

    If we think about the mentioned network configuration it seems to me
    problem free. Ay comments or good ideas to troubleshoot this kind of
    problem?

    Thanks, Risto

2371.1Try HUBwatch, and IRIS !!MSDOA::REEDJohn Reed @CBO = Network ServicesThu Jun 15 1995 03:3310
    Use HUBwatch, and look at the Spanning Tree Mode of the DECswitch 900,
    and see if it keeps toggling, DEC to IEEE, or changing roots.

    Also, install IRIS on a PC, and look for Bridge Spanning Tree packets.
    You should only have ONE (1) spanning Tree running. I have seen up to
    FOUR different spannning trees running at a customer site. (That
    network was on it's knees...)

    The LB200 is in the "STP Auto-select" mode by default, while the
    DECswitch products are in IEEE 802.1 mode by default. This has
    an effect only on the situation where there is one or more LB100,
    or non-Digital products trying to emulate LB100 (aka "dec spanning
    tree"). The auto-select mode automatically switches to the LB100
    STP, while the 802.1 mode treats LB100 hellos like any other
    multicast. In your situation, this is not a consideration since
    you don't seem to have LB100's in the network.
