2266.0. "DEF6U vs DEFHU" by DELNI::PIEPER () Wed May 10 1995 14:27

This is an attempt to clear up some of the confusion around the
retirement of the DEF6U-MA option and its replacement with the DEFHU-MU
    option.

    The DEF6U-MA is just a PREPACKAGED option of 1 DEF6X-MA and 6 DEFXU-BA
MOD-PMDs. So even after the DEF6U-MA option is retired, customers can
still order the individual components and assemble them. So don't
panic that customers can no longer get the DEF6U-MA.

The DEFHU product has 12 fixed UTP ports plus 2 MOD-PMD ports on the
front panel (it also has two backplane ports which yield a total of 16
ports). It has the following prepackaged options:

    	DEFHU-MX	12 port UTP with NO MOD-PMDs
    	DEFHU-MM	12 port UTP with 2 MMF MOD-PMDs (DEFXM-AA)
    	DEFHU-MS	12 port UTP with 2 SMF MOD-PMDs (DEFXS-BA)
    	DEFHU-MU	12 port UTP with 2 UTP MOD-PMDs (DEFXU-BA)

The DEF6U-MA product has six front panel UTP ports while the DEFHU
variants may have from 12 to 14 front panel UTP ports. While the DEFHU
product may look a little more expensive than the DEF6U, the customer is
getting DOUBLE the number of ports. This means that the price per port
for UTP on the DEFHU is 40% LESS THAN the cost of the DEF6U price per
    port!

Now if your customer only wants 6 UTP ports and no more, I can
understand where the DEF6U-MA could be useful. So order the DEF6X-MA
and six DEFXU-BA MOD-PMDs for the customer - they will get the exact
    same functionality!

So the DEFHU products are the cheapest (on a price per port basis) way
to deploy UTP FDDI connections. But if your customer only needs a few
UTP ports (2 to 6), order the DEF6X-MA concentrator and the appropriate
    number of DEFXU-BA UTP MOD-PMDs.
