2252.0. "RMON functionality?" by VAXRIO::ROLF (Vaporware Design Specialist) Thu May 04 1995 19:57

To bid on a large RFP we run into the following situation:

Customers RFP is heavily biased towards CABLETRON hubs, but we of
course would like to propose something based on our own product-set.

RMON is one of the major obstacles. E.G. we find:

    - a certain hub should "allow managment by RMON, according to RFC 1271"

    - another hub should "allow managment by SNMP and RMON"

    - Graphic LAN and WAN managment software, using an SNMP agent (MIB II
RFC 1213) must be supplied, but extra points are given for:

    	- software permitting managment by RMON (RFC 1271) and

    	- software should be totally compatible with REMOTE LANVIEW,
already in use at some sites.

Will our Packetprobe 90 or 900 with Probewatch software address all
    these requirements?

I'm not a Guru in the managment arena, so please forgive me if these
    points have been addressed elswhere.

    Any pointers welcome!

    Thanks in advance!

Rolf, RFC 1271 only addresses remote monitoring; it only provides of
control of remote probe devices. So, perhaps the customer is confused
in his terminology in wanting a hub to be managed by RMON.

If the customer really means that he wants to monitor the hub, then a
DECpacketprobe 90 in conjunction with PROBEwatch will do the job. For
the hub to be managed by SNMP and RMON, they will need both HUBwatch
and PROBEwatch, plus DECagent 90, if you want to bid a DEChub 90.

In conjunction with ManageWORKS 2.0 Workgroup Adminstrator, we can
provide graphical LAN and WAN management using MIB II.

Unless Cabletron has lowered the price of Remote LANVIEW, the sum of
the ManageWORKs, HUBwatch, and PROBEwatch prices will cost less than
    Remote LANVIEW.

None of our software is compatible with Remote LANVIEW, which is built
around an old version of HP OpenView for Windows.
