2200.0. "DECrepeater 90TS mgmt clarification needed" by DECPRG::PRNET::Pilar () Tue Apr 18 1995 16:57

Hi all,

there seems to be lot of confusion about DETMI management. Colleague of
mine has described in topic 2177 situation we have at the customer site:
DECrepeater 90TS in DEChub 90 together with DECagent 90 is managed
correctly (it has its own IP address). Double clicking on its front panel
they have all of those nice "speedometers", security setup etc. When it is
installed in other DEChub 90 together with DECbridge 90 it is not displayed
correctly. The answer is "... it is expected behaviour ..." but looking to
the HUBwatch V 3.1 (DEC OSF/1 version but I hope it should be the same for
OpenVMS too) I can read:

....

DECagent 90 V2.0 (which serves as SNMP agent for HUBwatch) installed
on the LAN and a Bus Master Device (DECbridge 90, DECbridge 90FL at
V3.1 of firmware or DECagent 90 at V2.0 of firmware) installed in the
DEChub 90 to manage these devices:

 o DECrepeater 90C, 90T, 90T+, 90FA, 90FL, installed in a DEChub 90
only. The DEChub 900MS integral agent can manage these devices when
installed in a DEChub 900MS. These devices are not manageable when
    not installed in a hub.

o DECserver 90L, 90L+ (Note: The DEChub 900MS Agent will not perform
bus master for these devices when installed in a DEChub 900MS. A
Bus Master Device is required to be installed in the same hub as
these servers to display slot information. A DECagent 90 is required
on the LAN in order to manage these devices.)

o DECbridge 90, 90FL (Note: The DEChub 900MS Agent will not perform
bus master for these devices when installed in a DEChub 900MS. A
DECagent 90 is required on the LAN in order to manage these devices.)

o DECserver 90TL, when installed in the DEChub 90, to display on the
    Hub Front Panel View.

o DECbrouter 90, when installed in a DEChub 90, to display on the Hub
    Front Panel View

o DECserver 90M, when installed in a DEChub 90, to display on the Hub
    Front Panel View

 o DECrepeater 90FS, 90TS when installed in a DEChub 90, to display
on the Hub Front Panel View.

....

So I would say DECrepeater 90TS should be managable this way. I think it
would be very useful to clarify DECrepeater 90TS management status and also
to explain plans for new firmware release with respect to management
functions. In my oppinion DECrepeater 90TS is very good product but is has
to easy managable in DEChub 90 too. As listen to the customers these box
are more often planed to sit in DEChub 90 than DEChub 900MS.

Thank you for any answers and oppinions

This paticular topic appears to be the best place to post my question,
however, I did not do an extensive search for anything related to
    DECrepeater 90TS and hub management.

    Situation: Hubwatch for Windows V4.0.1
                DECrepeater 90TS - Firmware V1.1.0
                DECrepeater 90C
                DEChub 90 backplane

Customer wants to use the DECrepeater 90TS to manage the DECrepeater
90C in the DEChub 90. Documentation sure seems to state that this is
possible, but neither the customer or I can make it happen.

From reading other entries, I gather that a planned update to the
DECrepeater firmware is what is needed to get the functionality.
Basically I am looking for some sort of confirmation and/or
explanation. Should the DECrepeater 90TS (and FS), work just like a
DECagent 90? Is the documentation ahead of the capabilities?

    Thanks

I believe the 90TS firmware to do backplane and repeater management
will not be available until September.
