2181.0. "FDDI MAC Address on M ports ?" by TLSE01::SELLES (Pierre-Jean - Toulouse -France) Sat Apr 08 1995 13:42

	for the DecConcentrator 900MX ( and also
other FDDI modules like the new 12 TP_PMD ports ) ,
is it possible to know the MAC address of the
attached stations thru M ports ?

the MAC information windows gives UNA and DNA addresses
for both ports A & B  .

but is this also possible for M ports ?

thanks in advance for your replies

2181.1It can be done, but you don't want to!NETCAD::B_CRONINMon Apr 10 1995 21:2511

    It is not possible to access the address directly, becasue the ports
    don't hafe any way to talk to the MACs. If you have access to a station
    that can send SMT frames, you can determine what the token order is,
    and then map the token order to the active ports of the concentrator,
    remembering that the 1st MAC address upstream of the concentrator's mac
    will be the address of the station connected to the M port closest to
    that MAC. You then ask the station who its upstream neighbor is, and
    then match it to the next active port. Needless to say, this is
    very tedious.

2181.2Once upon a time ... Decmcc ELMTLSE01::SELLESPierre-Jean - Toulouse -FranceTue Apr 11 1995 13:0327
i remember a fabulous product from the decmcc suite on VAX/VMS
that allowed to draw the exact topology of an FDDI ring :

Decmcc ELM ;

it worked on a Vax connected via Ethernet to
 a decbridge 620 connected to FDDI , and was able thru decoding of NIF
and SIF messages to detect all FDDI stations and issue a bitmap image
of the working ring

what happened to this product ?

i can see no replacement with polycenter netview suite
and it hasn' been ported to osf/1 ; what a pity !!!

now , after the weeping , my question :

do you know a good product on osf/1 able to do the same thing ?

or can Hubwatch do this in a future release ?

this is a great help when managing FDDI networks

thanks for your inputs PJ

The FDDI ring maps in the ELM component of DECmcc were produced by the same
people who are now making HUBwatch. We talked about having ring maps (both
FDDI and Token Ring) in HUBwatch V4.0, but it did not make it in there.

If you'd like to see this feature in HUBwatch, please contact the HUBwatch
product manager, Jac NAC::Forrest or engineering manager Bruce NETCAD::Sweet.
