1975.0. "How to customize 900EE port names?" by CHR27::YEUNG (im2bz2p,ru?) Wed Feb 08 1995 04:16

My customer just purchased a DECswitch 900EE to bridge their 6 Ethernet
segments. They have meaningful names assigned to each Ethernet. But in
HUBwatch V3.1, the six Ethernet ports are listed as port 1 ... port 6.
It is very difficult to remember which port is which Ethernet. Is it
possible to customize the port names when using HUBwatch to manage the
900EE?

If this is expained elsewhere or in a manual, please give me a pointer.
Thanks

1975.1There probably is...but haven't tried it myselfNETCAD::BATTERSBYWed Feb 08 1995 11:504
    I would think there is a way of affixing a "label" to a port, but I
    haven't tried it myself.

No, there is no way (in SNMP) to assign a name to a port for the DECswitches
or the PEswitch. I forget exactly which MIB object corresponds to port name,
but it is a read-only string that says something like "FDDI Port 1" or
"Ethernet Port 3" (ie: what is displayed by HUBwatch).

I don't mean using SNMP to assign a name to a DECswitch port.
All I want is to be able to tag each port of the HUBwatch 900EE
display with some meaningful text. I guess this will have to be a
future enhancement.

Thanks.

    I may be losing my mind, but...

    HUBwatch lets you define the LABEL of each lan channel created. You
    simply start HUBwatch and place the mouse over the default of "LAN 1"
    and replace it with whatever you wish. I'm 99% sure I've done this
    before.

If you don't use SNMP, you have to use a Post-It note. Or write directly
on the switch's bezel.

But this does not necessarily correspond to DECswitch ports, which can
be front-panel ports.

It can't be done now. It's a nice idea, but if you want it you need to
talk to the product manager.
