1864.0. "HW for Windows V3.1 install problem" by GLDOA::LOPEZ () Tue Jan 10 1995 18:44

       I have a DECpc 433SE laptop using the PCMCIA wireless ROAMABOUT NIC, DOS
V6.22, windows V3.1, 20Mb memory and 120Mb hard drive. With this configuration,
I have been very successful in the past performing two demos at the same time -
wireless technology and HUBwatch for Windows (I also have a DEChub 900MS with
a number of modules, one of which is the AP). Just prior to Christmas I had
some problems on my hard drive and had to rebuild the PC from scratch.

 I installed DOS, then Windows, then MS Office and finally the ROAMABOUT s/w.
I then went to install HW for Windows V3.1 but I keep getting the following
error: After selecting "Install HUBwatch and network", it copies all the files,
then installs the icon, then I choose "Go ahead and modify", it verifies the
location of AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, and WIN.INI. After I hit OK on WIN.INI
screen, I get this:

                            SHADOW

       An error has occured in your application.
    If you choose Ignore, you should save your work in a new file.
       If you choose Close, your application will terminate

 I select Close, and I then get:

                  APPLICATION ERROR

         SHADOW caused a General Protection Fault in
             module ~TMP104E.EXE at 0013:12f3.

I have tried this installation several times with the same error at the same
point in the installation. The only difference being that the EXE file name
in the APPLICATION ERROR scren sometimes changes (I saw it once read ~TMP131F.

Note: I did make a mistake when installing the ROAMABOUT s/w. Initially, I
put an incorrect value in the following line which went into my config.sys,
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE noems X=d000-d0ff -- I put in a differnet value for
d0ff. I corrected this problem and now all SystemSoft Card Services come up
cleanly.

Any suggestions regarding the HUBwatch error is greatly appriecated.

         I remember seeing this in a hands on lab and the PC had
    a virus. When that was fixed the problem was gone. Hate to suggest
    this but have you scanned for a virus particularly since you have
    obviously used a lot of floppies during the rebuild?

    Ed,

      Thanks for the suggestion. I scanned for a virus when I started
    having problems on the PC, but not since the rebuild.
