1854.0. "Bradner's number for other vendors?" by CGOS01::DMARLOWE (Have you been HUBbed lately?) Fri Jan 06 1995 17:18

We have all seen Scott Bradners numbers for the DECswitch 900EF, aka.
DECbridge 900MX. I'm looking for numbers for other vendors switches.
Primarily 3COM's link builder series. They have an FDDI, 6 port Ethernet
switch that I would like numbers for.

Do we have such numbers internally? Has Scott done any testing and if
so is there a way to get them?

Take a look at note 1163.5 I think it says there that you
can ftp to hsdndev.harvard.edu. The directory to look for is
"interest". I'm sure Scott Bradner tests most products. I don't
have any idea how long Bradner leaves data there though.
    Happy hunting.

1854.2Nothing or I'm blind.CGOS01::DMARLOWEHave you been HUBbed lately?Sat Jan 07 1995 03:307
I tried everything from "/interest" to "/int" and upper case and found
no files or directories. No luck. 8^( Thanks for the pointer though.

Any suggestions on finding 3COM's LINK switch performance numbers and
    any knockoffs?

These numbers tend to change quite rapidly. Bradner does an article at
least twice a year in a networking trade magazine. I believe
Network Computing was the one in which he did his last report. There
is typically a table consisting of most bridge/router/switch vendors and
performance numbers for each of their products, along with a writeup in
which he makes general observations. He also makes presentations at
Interop on the results of tests completed just prior to the conference.

His current archive is on the machine newdev.harvard.edu (note, not
hsdndev). To get the performance data: go to the directory
/pub/ndtl/results/data. In here, there is a directory for each
vendor: for example, Digital, 3Com, etc. In that directory he has a
file for every product tested, for each type of test. It's a bunch of
numbers, so you need to look at the explanatory text file in the
data directory to figure out the convention. I'm not sure how up-to-date
his archive is though, since it's becoming more sensitive with
big sales hinging on performance these days. If the numbers are there,
that's probably because the vendor wants it to be there..
