1823.0. "Connect DEWBR to UTP Ethernet?" by CSOA1::BOLENBAUGH (What project?) Tue Dec 27 1994 17:30

In a week or so I will be the proud owner of a DECbrouter 90T2 (and a
DEChub 900) connected to a pair of 56Kb data circuits. I'm at a customer
site, where there is an RJ45 jack (UTP Ethernet) in the wall nearby. The
two are supposed to get connected, so the customer's network traffic gets
routed to the other end of the phone lines.

Could someone provide an authoritative suggestion of what hardware is needed
to hook the router to the ethernet?

A UTP repeater and a FOIRL repeater are on order in case they're
needed, but I was hoping all that's really needed is a cable or a balun.

Many thanks,
Phil

1823.1You'll Need a 10BaseT repeater.MSDOA::REEDJohn Reed @CBO, (803) 781-9571 NIS NetworkerTue Dec 27 1994 20:227
    If the DECbrouter will be installed inside of the DEChub900, then you
    will need a 10BaseT repeater card inside of the DEChub900 also. Choose
    any of the available repeaters with RJ45 jacks.

1823.2Thanks. More questions?CSOA1::BOLENBAUGHWhat project?Wed Dec 28 1994 21:0716
Thanks. I'm glad to know that will work. Someone had told me that
connecting our repeater to the customer's repeater nose-to-nose like
that was not within specs.

My DEWBR arrived today -- it's so tiny next to the Vitalink -- and it
appears to have a UTP port on it. With an H7082-AA "wall bug" instead
of the DEChub 900 as a power supply, could the DEWBR's RJ45 jack be cabled
directly to the customer's RJ45 UTP Ethernet jack? It's much cheaper.

Also, the installation guide shows the other end of the phone line
connected to a Cisco 7000. At the other end of our phone lines will be
another DECbrouter 90T2. The 90T2's will talk to each other without
the Cisco box, won't they?

Thanks again,
Phil
1823.3Follow the 5-4-3 ruleMSDOA::REEDJohn Reed @CBO, (803) 781-9571 NIS NetworkerWed Dec 28 1994 21:3025
    Yes,

    In the Stand-Alone mode, you can use the UTP port (or the side ThinWire
    port, not both). I thought your initial note talked about a
    DEChub900, sorry. If you use the 10BaseT port, you will need the
    external power supply, and you can connect it DIRECTLY to the wall jack
    from the facility 10BaseT repeater. If you install a DEChub900 with a
    repeater module (lots more dollars), then you will have to connect to
    the facility repeater using a FLIP 10baseT cable.

    Most 10BaseT Repeaters have a built-in flip, at the 10baseT jack, which
    should be marked with an "X". I have replaced several TransLAN
    bridges with DECbrouter 90's. You will want to enable routing, I have
    found, since it optimizes the traffic on the leased line, and is faster
    than the CISCO soft-bridge.

    The instructions talk about connecting the DECbrouter90 to another
    CISCO, because it thinks it IS a CISCO. The Software package even
    boots with the CISCO logo, and identification. I am surprised that it
    is shipped with a DEC (08-00-2b-xx) MAC address !!!! It will
    communicate with any other router that speaks CHDLC, or other language
    supported by your software revision (Other CISCO, DECnis, or
    DECbrouter90, etc).

1823.4Yes, DEChub 900, maybe.CSOA1::BOLENBAUGHWhat project?Thu Dec 29 1994 20:409
Thanks, John.

You are correct, there is a DEChub900 on order. It's a long story, but
now all that's left is the DEChub and DECbrouter. Future expansion, maybe.

At the risk of further imposition, where is the 5-4-3 rule documented?

Thanks,
Phil
1823.5Easy rules to follow.CGOU14::DMARLOWEHave you been HUBbed lately?Fri Dec 30 1994 00:044
    Some mention of the rules are in 71, 395 and 805. Also you may want to
    try UPSAR::ETHERNET 31 and 86.
