1634.0. "DB900MX/DR900FP/HW3.1.1/MAM below 3.0 - Customer satisfaction issue" by GIDDAY::STANISLAUS () Sun Oct 30 1994 07:25

More and more our customers are running in the following situation.
It has happened thrice in the last 4 days.

Customer buys DB900MX and/or DR900FP. He is told he need HW v
3.1.1. He gets it after many hours of negotiating with his respective
account manager. Then he goes to use it, but he is unable to configure
the above new modules he has bought. He is told is MAM is at FW 2.2.1
and is too old. Again after several hours of negotiation with the
account manager he gets DECNDUPLUS for the PC and the latest MAM FW.
All this could mean several hours not being able to use the new modules
and the network connected to these new modules. Customers get
frustrated because their schedule is falling behind.

Is is just us in the South Pacific Territory or other territories
seeing similar situations. The drama is more serious if the customer
does not have a DEPCA or Ethw3 Ethernet card, because I haven't still
found a way of using DECNDUPLUS on some of the Ethernet cards that some
    of our customers have.

    	Hi,

Here in Spain is the same situation for the customers. The
hubs hardware and modules arrive with the firmware version old
and the customer is sufering the situation that have lost time
and call to Digital in order to solve this situation.
The last paragraph that you said I don't know because I don't
    	sufer this.

Although this does not address the question of why new products
arrive with old firmware (manufacturing starts using new firmware
as soon as it is released, so I suspect this is a logistical problem),
if the customer has an Internet connection it's easy to
get firmware for any hub product. In fact it's a good idea to
check here regularly (every few months) to stay up-to-date. See
    release notes for pointers.

1634.3Not many customers in our territory have Internet ConnectionGIDDAY::STANISLAUSTue Nov 01 1994 02:465

Internet Connectivity.

1634.4Making a PC with DECROU installed load a DECbridge 900MX ??GIDDAY::STANISLAUSTue Nov 01 1994 03:2331
I have a PC which I use for downline loading my DECnis in our CSC lab
using DECROU - the DECnis PC configurator.

I edited the bootp.tab file in the DECROU directory and added a bootp
entry for a customer's brain-dead DECbridge 900MX. (customer interrupted the
DB900MX power while flash-loading).

Then I say DECROU and within DECROU menu I select BOOTP.

Then I power up the flash-corrupted DB900MX and follow note number
1193.1 in this conference - how to resurrect dead DB900MX.

LED for port 1 lights green. I see a BOOTP request from the DB900MX
on my PC. I see a file match found DEFAB140.BIN. I see the second LED light
on the DB900MX for abot 30 or 40 seconds (meaning BOOTP response is received
and TFTP process has started). After this 40 secods or so, LED 1 turns ON and
LED 2 turns OFF. I get a message on the PC running BOOTP under DECROU sending
file DEFAB140.BIN, then timed-out on send, timed-out on resend, again and again.

Finally we resurected this DB900MX using our CSC's Ultrix System by
putting a bootp tab entry on that system.

So there is something specific to DECROU BOOTP. Is it meant to load
DECnis only. The same PC can load our DECnis fine using BOOTP.

	Cross Posted in DECnis conference.

1634.5How can we make it better?ROGER::GAUDETBecause the Earth is 2/3 waterTue Nov 01 1994 11:5610
The current mechanisms we use to distribute the DEChub firmware include the SSB,
internal DECnet and WWW access, and external Internet access. I would like to
solicit any other suggestions for making the latest firmware available so that
customers get updates more quickly. As Anil mentioned earlier, manufacturing
receives the latest images very soon after they are released, but the logistics
of upgrading in-stock modules is problematic at best.

Here's your chance to be heard.

You do (or can) - sounds like an opportunity for you to be a hero to
    your customer...

I think we should seriously consider putting this software on CDROM and
include that with the standard kit. We could put alot on the CDROM
including marketing materials, etc including the firmware updates.
1634.8The firmware will be there soon!ROGER::GAUDETBecause the Earth is 2/3 waterThu Nov 03 1994 11:424
Look for the DEChub Consolidated Firmware Kit V1.1 to be included on the Nov. 94
Consolidated Distribution CDROM for OpenVMS. DECndu Plus will be there also.

If you check in this this conference & and the Brouter notes, you will
see that I have sucessfully used the DECrou software to upload the firmware
into the modules. I too modified the BOOTP.TAB file, and had no problem. But,
I was not trying to revive a brain-dead DB900MX, just load in new FW. Connected
to the module, and from the menu, input the IP address of the bootp server
and the filename, and viola...update done.
