1584.0. "FDDI & PEswitch config question" by JAYJAY::KORNS () Mon Oct 17 1994 16:18

Have customer who wants to go with PEswitch900TX today to add
performance for server connections and plans to do to FDDI next
year (when they would buy DECcon 900MX, adapters, etc). They
also will have some shared 10baseT LANs and this environment
will span two DEChub900s due to port count and desire to have
2nd hub for reconfigurable backup.

I'm trying to avoid the need for a DECcon in the initial config
since customer views it as a future requirement. Today they
want DECswitch900EF (to switch amoung shared lans and FDDI) and
a PEswitch900TX for high perf connections. Is this configuration
OKay until they add a DECcon:

FrontPanel   HUB-1                                      HUB-2
                     .------------------------------.
                     |                              |
      +---------+ +--A------+                    +--B------+ +---------+
      | PE900TX | | DS900EF |                    | DS900EF | | PE900TX |
      +--A---B--+ +------B--+                    +------A--+ +--A---B--+
         |               |                              |           |
         `---------------'                              `-----------'

Backplane

I know this is a wrapped ring, but will it operate and would there be
any hidden issues preventing it from working. Other suggestions?

Next year, when treed backplane support arrives and customer buys
DC900MX, config would grow to look like:

FrontPanel   HUB-1                                      HUB-2
                          .---------------------.

    Yes it will work. I have used the DS 900EF for connections into
    and outside of the hub.

	A word of caution. We are still working on how to implement trees
	on the backplane. So, don't assume a particular backplane
	configuration. For example, there will not be a device that
	supports 2 M ports on the backplane. Karl Pieper and friends
	are currently writing up a note that describes trees and how
	they will be implemented on the backplane. Wait (about 3-4 weeks)
	for his entry to get the gory details.

	What's the concentrator for? Are there FDDI stations (SAS or DAS) not
	shown in your picture that will be attaching to the M ports of the
	concentator?

1584.3We will proceed with caution :-)JAYJAY::KORNSFri Oct 21 1994 18:369
RE: .1 & .2: Thanks.

RE: .2: Thanks for warning. I think I see Karl's new note and I am
pulling to print right now.

The idea is that sometime next year they will upgrade some servers
to FDDI and actually plug them into DC900MX front panel ports. Yeah,
I need to re-look at the config rules and how this would all be config'ed
given feature/functions in the microcode.
1584.4A better way...NETCAD::SLAWRENCEMon Oct 24 1994 17:1726
    As the others said, the current config will work.

    When your customer wants to upgrade, it should be to:

FrontPanel   HUB-1                                    HUB-2

   +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
   |                             +-------+                             |
   |                             |       |                             |
 +-A-------+ +---------+ +-------B-+   +-A-------+ +---------+ +-------B-+
 | DC900MX | | PE900TX | | DS900EF |   | DS900EF | | PE900TX | | DC900MX |
 +-------B-+ +-A-----B-+ +-A-------+   +-------B-+ +-A-----B-+ +-A-------+
         |     |     |     |                   |     |     |     |
         +-----+     +-----+                   +-----+     +-----+

    This has the following advantages over what you drew:

       o Don't have to wait for treeing; you don't need it.

       o Each hub is connected to the other via two modules;
         fewer components that can fail and partition the ring.

       o By putting one of the hub-hub connections on the bridge,
         you get one more front panel M port available on each
         concentrator.
