1512.0. "DECswitch/PEswitch information on Web" by NETCAD::ANIL () Fri Sep 30 1994 21:19

    This is to announce a new resource for information about the 900 Switch
    family of products (DS900EF, DS900EE, PE900TX) on the DEChub Web.
    It is available only on Digital's internal Web for now.

    Details on various aspects of the switches, as well as answers
    to most commonly asked questions can be found here. It currently
    has the following sections:

    * Description of each of the 3 products
    * Product positioning
    * Feature list
    * HUBwatch management screens for the switches
    * Filtering capabilities
    * Performance figures
    * Scott Bradner test report
    * Procedure to fix corrupted Flash images
    * SNMP MIBs supported
    * How to use LEDs to monitor status of module
    * Latest Release Notes

    This is fine for people who know how to access this web. Can someone
    please move these to a valid vms directory that can be accessed by all.

    Thanks.

1512.2sorry, butNETCAD::ANILMon Oct 03 1994 21:5217
    - You can access "this web" with VMS, UNIX, ULTRIX, OSF, Pathworks,
      or Microsoft
    - you can use an Alpha, MIPS, a plain old VS2000, IBM PC, or
      Apple MACintosh
    - you can view it with a color graphics monitor, monochrome monitor,
      or a plain old ASCII terminal off a VMS timesharing machine
    - You don't need to have Internet access, this stuff is all
      Digital internal (and confidential) - but you do have Internet
      access, whether you know it or not.

    A lot of people have spent a considerable amount of time to ensure
    that any Digital employee can use the Web. The least you can do
    is make a small effort to figure out how to get started. It
    would be well worth your time.

    Hint: Ask a colleague, or your system administrator, or get into
    SOFBAS::INTERNET_TOOLS.
1512.3MOSAIC is THE tool but ...TLSE10::SELLESPierre-Jean - Toulouse -FranceTue Oct 04 1994 08:4316

	i completely agree with you concerning the WEB and its use
thru Mosaic ; it is quite amazing all you can do with it
	i'd experienced it in a customer site ;-)

	but ...

	there are still Digital sites not equiped with Decnis ( i know ,
we look like Jurassic Park !! ) so we dont have TCP/IP access to Easynet .

	this should be fix asap , but , meanwhile , if there were an old
decnet access , we would be happy with it !!!

	thanks for the Dinosaurs 	PJ

    I agree that access through TCP/IP would be very nice however IP is NOT
    routed out of this office let alone out of the country yet. I have no
    eta as to when this will change so please don't be so quick to assume I
    am lazy and don't want to bother finding out how to get on this so
    called Digital Web.

    	Perhaps those in the US who enjoy the full services provided by
    connections to the EASYnet core should consider their global counter
    parts. All the hoopla about MOSAIC and pointers to Web servers and FTP
    locations, means diddly to some stuck behind a reverse lat gateway with
    no IP connectivity to anything. Canada has no IP services. Canada
    will not have IP services until January at one site possibly.

    	Please take pity on those who are not so fortunate to be viewed as
    a strategic market. Hell we only make our numbers every year.

1512.6Please, no more flames...SLINK::HOODI'd rather be at the PenobscotTue Oct 04 1994 13:588
Please, no more flames about web access. Engineers here made the honest
mistake of assuming that everyone in the company has access to the internet.

The flames *should* go to the people who control the network and to the people
they report to. There is critical info there that the field needs to know.

    	I agree that there is critical info there that the field requires.
    All I'm trying to get across ( and I believe the others) is that we
    don't have access, and won't in the next several quarters at best, and
    therefore are requesting DECnet access to this information.

    	Believe me we have protested the uncompetitive environment we are
    faced with but have been told as I'm sure everyone has, that there
    isn't the money. So please try to provide DECnet access for this
    valuable information.

    I understand - without TCP/IP it's not possible to access the
    Web.

    A couple points, and some suggestions:

    - Language nit - this caused some confusion for me. "TCP/IP" is not the
      same as "internet", which is also not the same as "Internet". A while
      back, many of us had TCP/IP but no access to the Internet; Digital's
      IP gateway folks have fixed that recently to allow limited access to the
      outside world.

    - One of the earlier replies mentioned the lack of a DECNIS. In
      a branch office a DECbrouter 90 would be much more appropriate,
      and also cheaper. Also, I believe the WANrouters now
      offer IP functionality.

    - Use of a Brouter90 assumes that a connection point is available into
      the DEC IP network. If all you have is DECnet access, I believe
      that there is a Digital product out there that runs IP over
      DECnet that you might want to look into.

    - Failing all this, get an account on some machine in DEC that you
      can "set host" to, which has IP access, and use "lynx" to get at the
      Web.

    The ideal solution, of course, is to have "official" connect points into
    Digital's IP backbone to branch offices which need it. But there
    are workarounds.

    As far as those who would like to have this info available over DECnet:
    that's mostly where it comes from anyway, with some graphics
    thrown in. It's something I did in my spare time on my own
    initiative - nothing official. Too bad (and worrisome) that so many
    people don't have TCP/IP connectivity. I'd have liked to see at least
    one reply in here saying that someone from the field benefited from it!!
    Anyway: do a title search for a keyword from the topics listed in .0
    in this conference for the same info. The other thing to look at is
    Sales Updates, which are also available on VTX.

   I eventually got my hands on a mosaic web system and tried to get access as
   well as direct ftp access only to get no response from the node anyway. Is
   the system still reachable or does it get taken offline ?

    If you were trying to access it from outside of Digital, you wouldn't
    be able to get to it since this is Digital internal-only access.
    If trying from within, and you consistently can't get access, talk
    to Scott Lawrence (NETCAD::). The internal IP network occasionally
    gets hosed, but usually recovers quickly.
