1507.0. "DECmcc or Netview to manage HUB900" by EEMELI::SETALA () Fri Sep 30 1994 13:20

        hi,

one of our customer which have mcc want to know if you can
set alarms for hub modules. For examles they want to check
line counters(error, packet rate and utilization) of
        ports of repeaters an bridge's.

They are planning to buy more HUB900's if they can setup alarms
for hub modules. They will buy hub's from someone else than
Digital if they can't setup alarms by using mcc or Netview.

The customer think that it is not enough that they get
SNMP trap for example if some port is dissabled.
They want to check counters too. Customer don't want to
look HUBwatch they want to have automatical alarms which
send messages by mail or to pager. So HUBwatch will not
        be the whole answer.

If it is easier to setup alarms by using Netview that's okey
because then they will change mcc to Netview.

        cheers

Matti,

This is really an Mcc/Netview issue. Network Management Stations (NMSs)
typically allow alarms to be set-up by having the user specify the objects
which are to be monitored, poll rates, thresholds, and other stuff. Some
NMSs allow complicate formulas to be applied to the objects being monitored.
I don't know about Mcc, but I know Netview has a pretty sophisticated alarmer.

DEChub products support a lot a SNMP objects. You could find many useful
things to alarm on. So yes, they can "check line counters(error, packet
rate and utilization) of ports of repeaters an bridge's".

I you tell me what, specifically, your customer is interested in setting
alarms on then I could point you to the appropriate objects to monitor.

By the way, some of the "next wave" products will support the RMON Alarm
and Event group. This provides a convenient and standard way to set alarms.
Also, your customer might be interested in the DECpacketProbe module.

1507.2More from the same customer !!EEMELI::SOHLMANJouko Sohlman , NIS Helsinki FinlandThu Oct 06 1994 12:1113
	Hello !

When the author of the .0 is on his well earned vacation
I am passing this question for him.

The question is the same as in .0 but this same customer has also
some old DEChub90's with DECagent90's. Is there a way to do the same
as in .1 with this old stuff also??

			Thanks in advance

Yes. Since this is an NMS feature you should be able to set alarms on
any SNMP device. The DEChub90 also has an extensive private MIB with
many objects worth monitoring.

There is one added wrinkle with the DECagent90 though. You need to be
aware of the poll interval the DECagent90 is using. The DECagent90
is capable of managing both local and remove devices. (Remote hubs
must have a DECbridge90.) The DECagent polls objects in the devices,
and puts the results in its MIB. If it's polling objects at a rate
of once every N seconds, then your NMS probably shouldn't poll these
object more frequently than every 2N seconds.
